Laurence Wheatley Obituary
Mr. Wheatley was born Oct. 1, 1919 in Kempton, Ind. to the late Oliver Frank Wheatley and Maye (Booher) Wheatley. On March 31, 1943, he married Betty (Dove) Wheatley, who preceded him in death Jan. 10, 1999.
He held numerous teaching and business positions and coached basketball at Pekin high school from 1946-1947 and also at Milltown High School.
Mt. Wheatley was a member of the Salem United Methodist Church. He was a 1937 graduate of Kempton High School, and a 1941 graduate of Central Normal College.
He graduated Officer Training school in 1942 and was a First Lieutenant in the U.S. Navy from 1942 to 1945, actively serving in the Pacific.
Mr. Wheatley was a member of the Masonic lodge since joining the Keystone chapter in 1946, and was a 32nd degree member of the Scottish Rite. He was a member of Sons of American Revolution (SAR), past president of the John Hay Chapter, past state treasurer, and was awarded the SAR's highest award, the Patriot Medal, for exceptional service to the Indiana SAR.
Survivors include a son, James "Jed" (Jane) Wheatley Brownstown; a daughter, Karen Fox (widow of Robert), Austin, Ind.; and six grandchildren: Laura (Brian) Nowling, Glenn (Kellie) Fox, Jenny Fox, Stephen (Diane) Wheatley, Hannah (Yunus) Rafiq, and Joanna (Joe) Reimann.
He was also survived by 15 great grandchildren, five nieces and five nephews.
Mr. Wheatley was preceded in death by four brothers: Oliver, Wilson, James and Gayle Francis; and two sisters, Angeline and Mary.
Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 31 at Dawalt Funeral Home, Salem. Interment is at Crown Hill Cemetery, Salem.
Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 30 and 9 to 11 a.m. Friday at the funeral home.
