In 1956, he entered the Allis-Chalmers Graduate Training Program in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, during which time he was granted a leave of absence to pursue a master's degree in industrial management at Georgia Tech. There he met his future wife, Sue Wells of Decatur, Georgia, a student at Emory University. They married in August 1958. They returned to Milwaukee as newlyweds, and in 1959 Clyde accepted a position as a sales engineer in Allis Chalmers's St. Louis office. While in St. Louis, the couple had three children: Martha, JoAnn, and Clyde.
In 1969, Allis Chalmers transferred Clyde to Pittsburgh where he worked as a marketing manager until 1975. In 1984, Clyde and a group of investors purchased Bethea, and Clyde served as President until 1988. In 1988, Clyde and Sue moved to Atlanta to be closer to Sue's family, and Clyde purchased and led another business, Eastern Manufacturing, a custom plastic parts manufacturer. In 1999, Clyde and Sue retired to St. Simons Island.
Upon moving to St. Simons, Clyde and Sue joined Golden Isles Presbyterian Church where Clyde served as an elder and Sue served as President of Women In the Church. Clyde was a 45-year Rotarian and served as President of the Rotary Club of St. Simons Island from 2003-04. From 2009-2010, Clyde served as district governor for Rotary District 6920 covering Southeastern Georgia.
In 2010, Clyde was elected as an at-large member of the Glynn County Commission and served from 2010-2014. During his tenure as commissioner, Clyde served as Chairman of the Brunswick-Glynn County Joint Water and Sewer Commission.
In addition to his professional activities, Clyde was an avid saltwater sportsman and spent over 75 years fishing Coastal Georgia's saltwater marshes and offshore. Clyde and Sue took classes in ballroom dancing most of their married life and enjoyed dancing at every opportunity, especially at the Jekyll Island Club. Clyde took great joy and pride in his three children and three grandchildren.
