Jean English-Hurst

Emma Jean English-Hurst passed away on Oct. 5, 2025, in Savannah.

Jean served with distinction in a variety of roles throughout a multifaceted career that spans academe, the arts and the business community.

She was born July 5, 1937, in Young Harris, to the Rev. Sim and Ruby Martin. Later the family moved to Canton, Ohio, where her father provided leadership and built the Canton Baptist Temple.

Jean and her late husband, artist/sculptor Ralph Hurst, were founding members of the Community Foundation of North Florida, and together and individually supported numerous charitable efforts as well as both visual and performing arts. They gave over 100 works of their private art collection to what is now the Ralph Hurst Gallery at the Tallahassee Community College.

Her educational credentials include a Ph.D. in Dramaturgy from Florida State University; Master of Fine Arts in Speech and Drama from the University of Georgia; Bachelor of Arts in English from Mercer University; several areas of post graduate work from Furman University, in Counseling; San Jose State University, in Writing; Northeastern University, Writing Program Administration; and University of Georgia, in Journalism.

Her volunteer activities spanned local, regional and national services in academic and civic circles. Her accolades included written publications as well as honors of Outstanding Educator, Outstanding Young Woman and Who's Who of American Women.

When she moved to St. Simons Island in Georgia, she became involved in Shorebirds, the Graduate Book Club, SSI Rotary, The Symphony Society, St. Simons Presbyterian Church, Golden Isles Live Community Concert Association Board and Sea Palms West Homeowners Association.
