Gene Anglin
Homer Eugene "Gene" Anglin Jr., 98, passed away peacefully on Sunday, July 3, 2022, at his home on St. Simons Island, Ga.
Anglin was born on Jan. 17, 1924, in Wadley, Ga. He was predeceased by his parents; two brothers; and first wife, Doris. He is survived by his second wife, Jean; son, Bruce Anglin (Karen); daughter, Marcia Noble; stepdaughter, Brenda Ellenberg; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren; step-grandsons, Matt Ellenberg (Ellen), Wells Ellenberg, and Will Ellenberg (Caroline); and step-great-granddaughter, Evelyn Grace Ellenberg.
After attempting unsuccessfully to join the U.S. Army Air Forces at the onset of World War II due to colorblindness, Anglin went to work for the Bell Aircraft Corp. in Buffalo, N.Y., building B-29 Superfortress bombers under license from the Boeing Co. In 1944, he enlisted in the U.S. Army and was assigned to a heavy weapons company of the 100th Infantry Division. Private First Class Anglin deployed to the European Theater, where his division encountered 185 days of uninterrupted ground combat during a brutal winter as it advanced through France and Germany until after the end of the war. He was awarded the Bronze Star Medal, Combat Infantryman Badge, and Presidential Unit Citation for extraordinary heroism in action against an armed enemy.
Upon returning from the war, Anglin earned a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology in 1950. He then worked for several engineering firms, including for 22 years at Robert and Company Assoc. in Atlanta, before serving as president of Chenault, Brady, and Anglin in Atlanta and director of Chenault and Brady Co. in Houston.
Anglin and his first wife, Doris, retired to St. Simons Island, where they were active members of St. Simons Presbyterian Church and the Rotary Club of St. Simons Island. Following Doris' passing, he remarried Jean, his loving wife and playing-cards companion for more than 20 years. He also began a second career as a golf course starter and ranger at Sea Island Golf Club, where he worked and played golf until his "second retirement" at the age 95.
Always humble, Anglin requested not to have a memorial service. The epitome of America's Greatest Generation, he will nonetheless be remembered for his patriotism, service above self, quick-witted sense of humor, generous smile and laugh, and loyal devotion to his family, friends, community, and country.
