James Roberts Jr.
James McMullan "Jim" Roberts, Jr., 87, of Saint Simons Island, and formerly of Monroe, passed away peacefully on Oct. 31, 2025.
Born in Atlanta on Nov. 27, 1937, Jim was the son of the late Clara Knox Nunnally Roberts Williamson and the late James McMullan Roberts. He was the grandson of the late Alethea Felker and Josiah Roy Nunnally and the late Susan McMullan and Colonel Orrin Roberts.
Jim graduated with honors from Northside High School in Atlanta, where he excelled as an all-star athlete in football and baseball and was selected to the Georgia State All-Star Team for two consecutive years. He attended the University of Georgia on a full athletic scholarship, earning a Bachelor of Business Administration and lettering in football for four years under Coach Wally Butts as one of "Wally's Boys." He was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity and later completed studies in architecture and business at the Georgia Institute of Technology.
Following college, Jim served in the United States Air Force, completing active duty at Dobbins Air Force Base and serving six additional years in the reserves, including activation during the Cuban Missile Crisis.
Jim spent his career as president of Nunnally Lumber Co., a family business, and later worked in construction and real estate development. A committed community leader, he served as president and vice president of the Monroe Rotary Club. He was one of the founding members of George Walton Academy - proudly known as part of the original "Dirty Dozen" - and generously donated the beginning acreage upon which the school was established.
Jim was a man of faith and a member of the United Methodist Church in Monroe.
He is survived by his wife, Susan Hunter Roberts; daughter, Catherine Roberts Stewart (Mark); son, James McMullan Roberts III (Jeannie); grandchildren, Daniel Patrick Stewart Jr. (Jordan), Sidney Roberts and Madeline Roberts; and great-grandson, Hank Daniel Stewart.
A memorial service will be announced at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to George Walton Academy in his honor.
