Lillie Spriggs Obituary
Lillie Carol Lewis Spriggs, 79, of Brunswick, passed away Friday, Feb. 25, 2022.
Carol was born to William Benston Lewis and Mildred Louise (McKinney) Lewis on Wednesday, Dec. 23, 1942, at 5:07 a.m. She was the namesake of Lillie Whorton Lewis, her great-aunt. She spent her first Christmas in St. Vincent's Hospital in Jacksonville, Fla.
The WB Lewis family moved to Brunswick, Ga., in 1946 and bought a crab processing plant from Samuel L. Lewis, renaming it Lewis Crab Factory.
In one of her early theatrical productions, she played the character "Little Lady Manners" at Jack and Jill Kindergarten. She proved to be a good student in school and an excellent cook under her mother's supervision. She was active in the Pirates of the Spanish Main while at Glynn Academy. When attending the University of Georgia, she became a member of Tri Delta Fraternity and an avid lifelong Bulldawg fan. She was a staunch supporter of family, friends and country.
Carol's teaching career started at Nash Junior High School in Smyrna, Ga., after her graduation from UGA in 1964. She accepted a teaching position at Glynn Academy to be closer to her family. In the fall of 1967, she met Ensign Nelson Spriggs, USNR, and they married in January of 1968. Their son, Collin Benston Spriggs, was born in Annapolis, Md., in July of 1971.
In June of 1972, following a very cold mid-Atlantic winter, she had her wish come true by moving back to the Peach State where she saw her last snowstorm in Brunswick at Christmas of 1989.
Carol was predeceased by her parents and son.
She is survived by her grandson, Collin Benston Spriggs Jr. of Brunswick, and numerous first cousins in Georgia and Florida.
A graveside service will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday, March 4, 2022 at Palmetto Cemetery with the Rev. Diane Lovin and the Rev. Jim Crandall officiating.
In lieu of flowers, please contribute in her name to animal causes of your choosing.
