Melba Gibson-Deen Obituary

Melba Gibson-Deen

On Thursday, Jan. 28, 2021, at 1 p.m. EST, Melba Gibson-Deen passed away at the age of 78.

Melba was born to Lucille and William Melton"Hootie" Gibson on Dec. 10, 1942, in Perry, Ga., where she lived until college. During those years she attended school and was a majorette at Perry High. Her sister Margeret, was a cheerleader.

Melba grew up in the '40s and '50s, and her character was somewhat defined by an era in the birth of rock 'n' roll. She loved to dance. She attended shows at the Macon Coliseum including Bo Diddley, BB King and Little Richard! She had a fun and free-spirited way that was certainly contagious. Her favorite color was blue.

Melba attended the University of Georgia, got married and moved to St. Simons Island.

There, she raised three children and started a successful career in real estate and residential construction. In addition to being a working mom, Melba was a member of the Jaycees and president of her garden club. She had an eye for visual art and enjoyed painting. She loved the beach and spent many Sundays boating and fishing on Pelican Spit and Little St. Simons with her family!

In the late '80s, she moved back to Perry, Ga., and started a second career in NDI at Robins Air Force Base. She retired 18 years later and moved back to St. Simons Island.

Melba is survived by her children, Natalie Anna Edwards, William Kilboure "Little Billy" Edwards Jr. of St. Louis, MO, and Lorace Lavonia Deen of Atlanta, Ga.

I am so sorry to hear about Melba this long after her death. I wish I could have reached out to her before. I worked with Melba at Robins
AFB for several years. She was a wonderful person, sweet, compassionate and caring. She will be greatly missed.
