Ray, Tommy Tolleson and I met up in Jesup on a Rainy Friday in the early 70s to watch a kid that later went to Geogia and caught the pass to beat Florida in the most important play in Georgia history.
Alabama wanted him . Ray and Tommy wanted him, Me too but I was just along with two great ones for the TideLindsey Scott, Lindsey Scott, Run Lindsey Run.
I can still see Ray up the middle of the field kick off return against Auburn.

I was a student @ Bama in the early 60's and met Ray @ a frat party in '63. He was really a "down-to-earth" type guy. But he was really big for a running back especially in those days (6'4" - 215/220 lbs ??). He looked intimidating but he really was laid back.
My dad & I were in the north end zone @ Legion Field in Nov.'64 when Ray took the 2nd half k.o.
7 yards deep in the end zone & ran it back against Auburn to seal a very tight game. I remember that play as if it happened yesterday even though its been 55 years!!
I'm not sure, but I think Ray & Joe Willie were elected team captains @ the end of the year.
That will tell you how well he was regarded by his teammates.
