Helen Sherwood Obituary

Helen Becraft Sherwood was born in Logan, Utah on July 27, 1928. She passed away peacefully in Pleasant Grove, Utah on June 22, 2012.

She was the third child of John Raymond Becraft and Ireta Harris Becraft along with her brother Ray and sisters Marian and Nancy. When Helen was 10 years old she went to live with her uncle and aunt Karl and Zola Harris who continued to raise her in Phoenix, Ariz. Helen served a mission for the LDS church in the Northwestern States Mission after which she married her sweetheart M. Ray Sherwood on November 18, 1950. They moved to Arkansas in 1960 and their six children graduated from Conway High School. In 1988, Ray and Helen served a LDS church mission together in Nashville, Tenn.

Helen was a devoted mother to six children: Ruth (Lanny), Connie, Karl (Elaine), Paul (Shauna), Stan (Sue) and Don; three of who (Connie, Karl and Don) preceded her in death. She was a devoted grandmother to 22 grandchildren and 27 great-grandchildren.

Throughout her life Helen was a shining example of Christ-like service to all those around her. Through her service she touched the lives of hundreds of neighbors, church members and extended family members. She will always be remembered, loved and missed.

Funeral services will be Tuesday, June 26, 2012, at Walker Sanderson Funeral Home in Orem, Utah. Interment will be at the Orem (Utah) City Cemetery.

I have been thinking of all of your and wished I could have been there in person so share your grief. I always thought fondly of Helen and love her smile. May you all be blessed with peace and remember her fondly knowing you will see her again someday.

My wife and I were honored to have walked upon the path of the Sherwood family. What a true servant of God. We remember in about 1966, my wife had just returned home from having a baby. Helen Sherwood and two of her little daughters showed up at our front door with a vacuum cleaner and cleaning supplies in hand. She said; “ I came to help you today.” My wife was embarrassed to have her go through our house and clean everything including the bathroom. Sensing and empathizing with this new mother, she said: “ I have been helped in my time of need. I am now able to return this service to another person. You will have your time to serve others.”

We never forgot that act of kind service. We will ever be grateful for those memories.
May the Lord bless Ray and all their posterity.
