Isabel "Chabela" Guzman
Isabel "Chabela"Guzman, 81, of Soledad, passed away peacefully Tuesday, March 6, 2012, at her daughter's home in Salinas.
Isabel was born in Tepic, Nayarit and came to Soledad with her husband and two children in 1964. She was a homemaker and mother to six children. Her husband passed away in 1972 at which time Isabel went to work as a laborer for Paul Masson Vineyards in Soledad. Isabel was proud to have supported Cesar Chavez and marched for the rights of farm laborers. Isabel also went on to oversee the construction of her family home on land that her husband had purchased before his death. After her retirement, Isabel cared for her grandchildren and enjoyed gardening and having coffee with friends at her home. She traveled back to her hometown in Tepic, Nayarit or "Mi Tierra", as she called it whenever she was able. She always looked forward to her trips to Reno and Las Vegas where she loved to play the slot machines. After becoming ill, in 1999 Isabel moved to Salinas to the family home of her daughter Elizabeth, where she was surrounded by family and had frequent visits from her children, grandchildren and friends.
Isabel was a very lively and outgoing person; she had a witty sense of humor and was always laughing and joking. She was a Catholic and had a strong faith and belief in God. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her and remembered for her strength and lively spirit.
Isabel was preceded in death by her husband, Jose Concepcion Guzman.
She is survived by her children, Rosa M Rios (Lucio) of Soledad, Jose Ramon Guzman (Esther), Olga Guzman, Juan Guzman, Elizabeth Rendon (Jesse), and Sergio Guzman (Jessica), all of Salinas. She leaves behind 23 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and numerous family friends who all loved and knew her as "Nana".
Visitation will be held Friday, March 9, 2012 from 3 to 7 p.m., at Woodyard Funeral Home; followed with Rosary at 7 p.m.
Funeral Mass will be held Saturday, March 10, 2012 at 12 p.m., at Our Lady of Solitude Catholic Church, 235 Main St., Soledad; followed with burial at the Soledad Cemetery.
