James McGill Obituary

MANSFIELD CENTER

James Joseph McGill, 78, of Mansfield Center, Connecticut, passed away peacefully on June 22, 2024, surrounded by his adoring family, after a valiant battle with cancer. He was born in Hartford, Connecticut, on April 13, 1946.

Jim grew up in West Hartford and graduated from Northwest Catholic High School.

In 1967, he married Patricia, and together they raised two sons, Michael and Scott. Jim and Patricia traveled extensively throughout the world, but their cherished family vacations at the beaches of Cape Cod held a special place in his heart. Family and sports were Jim's passions. He delighted in hosting the annual family Fourth of July picnic and enthusiastically supported the Boston Red Sox and UConn sports teams. As a combat veteran, Jim honorably served his country in the United States Army during the Vietnam War. Following his military service, he earned his degree from Central Connecticut State University. Jim then dedicated four decades of his professional life to the State of Connecticut as an IT specialist, retiring in 2003.

James Joseph McGill is survived by his beloved wife, Patricia (Burns) McGill, of Mansfield Center, CT, and their two sons, Michael (Carrie) McGill and Scott (Melinda) McGill. He is also survived by his cherished grandchildren, Chandler (Bailey), Aidan (Kaila), Sedona (Anthony) and Joseph, as well as his siblings, John (Sherry) McGill, Noreen (Leonard) Lema, Mary Ellen Augustine, Monica McGill, Catherine (Edward) Alexander, Elizabeth (Dennis) Cormier, and Patricia (Robert) Carlisle.

A memorial service will be held on Friday, June 28, 2024 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Joseph Church, 99 Jackson St. Willimantic, CT. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hospice of Eastern Connecticut. For an online memorial guestbook, please visit

At an early age I was blessed by the good fortune of meeting my friend John and his beloved brother "Jimmy" I was further blessed by being welcomed into the extended McGill household and made to feel that I was part of their family. I carry those warm memories in my heart to this day. They now help soften my sorrow for Jimmy´s loss and the loss to his family. May Jesus reward "Jimmy" for a life well lived and welcome him into heaven with the warmth and love as I was welcomed into his home and life.
Our heartfelt condolences and love to the McGill family.

I remember Jim as a quiet, kind, intelligent man. He had a great soft laugh that was captured in his eyes. My heart goes out to Patti, and their sons, Aunt Madeline, Bob and his family, and AnnMarie. I hope the many years and memories you had with Jim will bring you some comfort as you grieve. Much love and sympathy.
