Lillian Torrey Obituary

Lillian Louise "Lou" Bingham Torrey, age 77, passed away on February 18, 2026, at Baptist Medical Center in Jackson, Mississippi. She was born on July 22, 1948, in Natchez, Mississippi, to Louise Price and Samuel Bingham.

Affectionately known as "Miss Lou" by generations of students and families, Lou devoted 25 years of her life to teaching Pre-K4 at First United Methodist Church of Clinton. She retired in May of 2020, leaving behind a legacy that few educators ever achieve. For decades, she was the very first teacher that Clinton mommas trusted with their sweet little ones; year after year, sibling after sibling. She became a beloved hometown figure, instantly recognized and joyfully greeted at every school event, church gathering, restaurant, or quick run to Walmart.

But before she became a Pre-K legend and Clinton's hometown celebrity, Lou was simply a wife and a momma.

She was the beloved wife of Edwin "Rodney" Torrey and a devoted stay-at-home mother to their two sons, Sam and Warren. Lou and Rodney shared a timeless love story, just two young kids who fell in love at the tender ages of 14 and 15 and never looked back. They married in 1969 at ages 21 and 22, forming a bond that would define Lou's life forever.

After Rodney's untimely passing in 1994 following a short battle with colon cancer, Lou remained ever faithful to the love of her life. She poured her heart, strength, and unwavering devotion into raising their two young sons, grounding them in love, faith, and an unshakable commitment to family and God.

In April of 2001, Lou stepped into one of her greatest callings, Nana. With the birth of her first granddaughter, her heart expanded once more. Two more granddaughters joined the family in June of 2013 and 2018, and Nana quickly became one of her most treasured titles. She brought endless joy, laughter, and unconditional love to her grandchildren, and they, in turn, filled a space in her heart that had ached so deeply since losing her beloved Rodney.

Lou is survived by her sons, Sam E. Torrey and R. Warren Torrey (Molly Lehan-Torrey) of Clinton; her cherished granddaughters, Amber Torrey Mathis (Michael), Evelyn "Evie" Claire Torrey, and Dorothy "Doe" Marie Torrey, all of Clinton; and her sister Olivia Ann Long, nephew, Hugh Long (Dee) of Southaven.

Lou Torrey lived a life defined by love, love for her family, her students, her community, and her faith. Her influence will be felt for generations, not only through the children she taught, but through the lives she shaped simply by being exactly who she was.

She will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
