John Gahr Obituary

John Edward "Jack" Gahr, 89, of DuBois, passed away Sunday, December 7, 2025, surrounded by his loving family. Born on May 4, 1936, in Elbon, PA, he was the son of the late Raymond and Margaret (Herzing) Gahr.

On May 11, 1963, he married Sandra Marie Hayes, who preceded him in death on July 6, 2023. He was a devoted husband for over 60 years, and a proud father of his three children. He was an amazing grandfather of six, and a great-grandfather of ten (with another one on the way), who all brought him immense joy. Jack was known for his warm smile, kind heart, and unwavering support of his family.

Jack grew up in St. Marys, PA and loved to play baseball in his younger days. He was a true St. Louis Cardinals fan, and enjoyed watching any baseball games on television or in person. After high school, Jack served in the U.S. Army. He returned home and met the love of his life, Sandy. Jack got a job at UPS and moved his family to DuBois. He retired after 31 years where he was a dedicated driver and received numerous safe driving awards.

Jack loved to play golf, host Pinochle card night with his buddies, bake and bowl. He was an accomplished bowler where he bowled in many leagues. In the span of 30 years, he had two perfect games.

The last 30 years Jack cared for his wife. He sacrificed his retirement life to make sure she could have the best life considering the circumstances. His selflessness and love for her was truly admirable. Jack was genuinely an Angel on Earth. He and Sandy were the masterminds behind the most wonderful holidays and family gatherings that anyone could ever imagine. Spending time with family brought both of them the most joy in life.

Jack is survived by his children, Jackie (Jerry) Allshouse, Sean (Brenda) Gahr, and Michele (Bob) Gearhart; six grandchildren, Amber Garrison, Jenessa (Mike) Martin, Colton (Rachel) Gearhart, Jeremiah (Mackenzie) Allshouse, Lindsay (Bret) Zimmerman, and Austin (McKenzie) Gahr; 10 great-grandchildren; one twin sister, Joanne Schneider; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Along with his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Carol Haberberger and Donna Simbeck, and two nephews.

Jack's kindness, generosity, and love for his family and friends will forever remain in the hearts of all who knew him.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, December 11, 2025, from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Baronick Funeral Home & Crematorium, DuBois.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, December 12, 2025 at 10:30 a.m. from Holy Spirit Parish at St. Catherine of Siena, with Msgr. Richard Siefer as celebrant.

Full military honors will be accorded from the church by the members of the DuBois Area Honor Guard.

Burial will follow in St. Catherine Cemetery.

The Mass will be live streamed and can be viewed by going to www.weareholyspirit.com

In honor of the wonderful care and compassion Jack received at Christ the King Manor, the family requests, in lieu of flowers, that memorial donations be made to Christ the King Manor, 1100 W. Long Ave., DuBois, PA 15801.

While I never met Mr. Gahr, I went to school with Sean and Michelle. And judging from the character of those children, there's no doubt in my mind that they had the very best of parents.

Sending his entire family my deepest condolences today.

I remember seeing Jack take care of Sandy at Mass. Truly, they both were an example of what true love is. Both carry on their love story in Heaven now. My condolences to the family.
