Gene Hern

Gene Hern, age 81, of New Castle, Indiana, passed away on November 23, 2025, in New Port Richey, Florida, due to Parkinson's related issues. Though he was born at Camp Atterberry, Indiana and lived mostly in New Castle – and proud of it – Gene spent his later years in Florida with his wife, Sue, after the two moved south to be close to their daughter, Andrea. He is survived by both, who loved him dearly.

When people think of Gene, they almost always think first of motorcycles. He loved them fiercely and held onto a few long past the point when his buddies thought it was practical, something that amused him to no end. Gene spent his career as a furniture salesman, and he could tell you more about mattress coil counts than anyone ever asked for (or ever expected to learn).

Gene was often described as stoic, and he had a presence that could intimidate people who didn't know him well. But to those he loved, he was gentle, loyal, and deeply loving. His hugs were kept for the few, yet amazingly strong, warm, and steady – and though he didn't laugh easily, when he did, it came from deep within and lit up his entire face.

His hugs and his laughter will be missed more than words can say.
