Elizabeth Rose Devaney Nardelli, 78, of Cedarville passed away peacefully with her family by her side on Tuesday, Oct. 4, 2011, at South Jersey Healthcare Regional Medical Center in Vineland.
Elizabeth Devaney was born in the small coal mining town of Man, W.Va., on Sept. 30, 1933. She was the eldest of five children. Her siblings were Thomas, Linda, Paul and Marsha. Her parents, Lura Perry Devaney and Basil Doliver Devaney are deceased. Elizabeth's husband, John G. Nardelli, also predeceased her. John had been the Cumberland County clerk for 20 years prior to his death.
Elizabeth was the proud mother of James Allen, Gary Garrison (Linda), Beth Garrison Parris (Nathan Lee Parris) and Thomas (Erin) Nardelli. She was blessed with nine grandchildren and three great- grandchildren.
Elizabeth attended many elementary schools, a new one each year because her father was a construction worker who built coal tipples. After high school, she attended Salem College, Salem, W.Va.; West Virginia University, Morgantown, W.Va., and graduated from Glassboro State College (Rowan University), Glassboro, with a BA in education. She taught for nine years in Norma, one year in Fairton, and 22 years at the Morris Goodwin School in Cedarville. She taught all elementary grades except second and fifth.
She was active in the CTA, CCTA, NJEA and the NEA. It was her belief that one should be part of professional organizations, local, state and national. Elizabeth felt that it was a privilege to be a teacher, a mother and a grandmother. She always felt and said that God had been good to her with good children and a profession that she loved.
Elizabeth attended the Parish of the Holy Cross/St. Michael's Roman Catholic Church in Cedarville since 1967. She joined the church in 2006.
Friends are invited to attend a funeral liturgy at 11 a.m. Monday at The Parish of the Holy Cross/St. Michael's Roman Catholic Church, 367 Main St., Cedarville. Interment will take place privately and at the convenience of the family.
Friends will be received from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Freitag Funeral Home, 137 W. Commerce St., Bridgeton.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to The Parish of the Holy Cross/St. Michael's Roman Catholic Church, 46 Central Ave., Bridgeton, NJ 08302.
