John Makos Obituary

John R. Makos, Jr.

Millville - John Robert Makos, Jr., age 71 of Millville, passed away peacefully on Thursday, April 15, 2021 at Inspira Medical Center, Vineland.

Born and raised in Millville to the late John R. Makos, Sr. and Jewel (Felmey) Wangstrom, John was a lifelong resident. He graduated from Millville High School, Class of 1969, where he was a well known and excellent baseball player. John went on to serve our country in the United States Air Force from 1969 to 1973 as a draftsman.

After completing his military service, John returned to Millville and began a career working as a Crew Chief for Shop Rite. He worked for Shop Rite for over 30 years, and retired in 2012. In 1990, John married his loving wife, Christina, and they shared over 30 years of marriage together.

John was a passionate Civil War reenactor, and loved going to Gettysburg and participating in countless events over the years. Working on his 1976 Corvette Stingray, traveling with his family over the years, and watching the History Channel were a few of John's other favorite pastimes. Most of all, John was a loving and dedicated husband & father who treasured the time that he was able to share with his family.

John was an extremely active member of his community. He was a co-founding member and Past Commander of the Colonel Francine Camp #7 of the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War. He loved the Boy Scouts and was the leader of Cub Scout Pack 4, and also a leader of the Boy Scouts of America Troop 4. For many years, he was a longtime member of the American Legion Nabb-Leslie Post No. 82 of Millville and a member of the Shekinah Lodge No. 58 Free and Accepted Masons in Millville. He was a longtime Little League coach in Millville, where he applied his extensive baseball knowledge.

John will be sadly missed by his loving wife Christina (Lamanteer) Makos of Millville; son Brian J. Makos (Donna) of Millville; daughter Adrian L. Makos-Pettit (Newell) of Dorchester; son John R. Makos, III (Newt) (Nicole) of Millville; son William Tozer of Millville; daughter Jennifer Tozer of Millville; daughter Colette Goranson of Belleplain; daughter Tina Hawk (Ron) of Vineland; two sisters, Diane McMahon (Joe) and Sonja Taylor (Kenny), both of Millville; 21 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was predeceased by his brother Joseph B. Makos; and one granddaughter.

There will be a Masonic Service on Saturday, April 24, 2021 beginning at 9:45 a.m. followed by a viewing from 10 a.m. to 12 noon in the Christy Funeral Home, 11 W. Broad Street, Millville. Funeral services will be conducted at 12 noon, immediately following the viewing. Burial with military honors will follow at Mt. Pleasant Cemetery, Millville.
