Sidney Lehmann, 67, of Yardley, Pa., died Thursday, Nov. 15, 2012, at his home after a long struggle with prostate cancer.
The son of Armin and Leona Saft Lehmann, Sidney was born in Brooklyn, N.Y., in 1945 and raised in Vineland. After attending Rutgers University, Sid earned his J.D. from Columbia University. He began his legal career at Camden Legal Services in 1971. In 1974, the State of New Jersey created the Office of the Public Advocate, where he was a founding lawyer. In 1975, he joined the Public Employment Relations Commission, where he became general counsel and began his lifelong career as a public sector labor attorney. He joined the law firm of Tomar, Gelade, Kamensky, Klein and Lehmann as a partner in 1983, and became the New Jersey counsel of the Philadelphia firm Williams, Willig, and Davidson in 1986. Also in 1986, he became the first Democrat ever elected in Lower Makefield Township to its Board of Supervisors, where he served until 1991. In 1988, he joined Szaferman, Lakind, Blumstein, Watter, Blader and Lehmann. He joined Zazzali, Fagella, Nowak, Kleinbaum and Friedman in 2008.
Sid successfully argued several landmark labor cases before the Supreme Court of New Jersey. In addition to his law practice, he taught courses as a co-adjutant professor at Rutgers University Graduate School of Management and Labor Relations. Sidney was twice named one of the "Top 100 Attorneys in the U.S." by Best Lawyers in America; in 2003 New Jersey Monthly named him to its "New Jersey's Top Labor and Employment Lawyers" list.
He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Janice Susman Lehmann; as well as his children, Christopher Lehmann (Kat Stein) and Elizabeth Hamberg (Todd); grandchildren, Jakob and Theodore Lehmann and Amelia Hamberg; and sisters, Judy Casper (Jack) and Barbara Tombros (Jimmy). An avid golf player and life-long tennis player, his greatest joys were his three grandchildren, particularly going to Shore with them.
Services will be held Sunday at 2 p.m. at the Adath Israel Congregation, 1958 Lawrenceville Road., Lawrenceville. Shiva will be observed at the Lehmann resident in Yardley, Pa., beginning Sunday at 7 p.m., and from 6 to 9 p.m. on Nov. 19 and 20.

Another year has passed but nothing has changed, when the final bell rings, the fight is over. You fought valiantly but in life, you can only fight so long. There are no "extra innings." You are missed and will always be missed by me and a lot of others. Rest well, my friend, rest well.

It is impossible to believe that it has been 10 years since we lost Sid in his last life battle. He won many battles in the past but, like all of us at sometime, lost the war. He was a good friend and I, and we, miss him very much. Memories last a lifetime and all of the memories are still fresh in my mind. I will always remember Sid and all of the good times that we shared. I miss him right up to today very much

It is hard to believe that it is going on 8 years since we lost Sid. I had just rekindled my relationship with Sid and Danny Weitzman, my two best friends in high school and now they are both gone. I miss them both and they are both gone way too soon, especially Sidney. I really wish we had those lost years back. I miss Sid greatly.

Extending my sympathy to the Lehmann family. I knew him for many years as an effective and forceful advocate before our agency, the Civil Service Commission, but always cordial and principled. I will miss him.

Dear Janice & Family,
I just found out about the death of Mr. Lehman. We worked together for the entire time he was at Camden Regional Legal Services, Inc. in Burlington, New Jersey. He was just starting out as an attorney. He helped my husband obtain a benefit that he was denied...he asked me about his situation and then proceeded to have me bring him information that he needed to get my husband the benefit he was entitled to. So many people has he helped. He was not only an attorney, he was a friend. In fact my daughter was calling him for advice on a matter, and told me that he had not called her back. I told her then, that "Mr. Lehman must be sick", because that's not like him. I was not aware that he was ill at all. We loved Sid Lehman! We are now praying for you and the family, (whom he loved so dearly, and anyone who knew him, knew that he truly loved Janice and family) that you will find comfort in knowing even that others cared so much for him...He was truly a blessing! Sincerely, Sandy Crump,1015 Walnut Street, Burlington, N. J. 08016

I can not express how disappointed I am that I will never speak to, see, laugh with Sid again. Although we had not seen or spoken to each other very much since high school and college, when I saw him earlier this year, it seemed like time had stood still as we could accurately visualize and discuss things that happened to us over 50 year ago just as if they had happened last week. I always considered Sid one of my closest friends in life and I always will. Rest in peace good friend. I hope I get to see you again one of these days when I join you.

Rest in peace Sid. You were a great guy. I will never forget you. At PERC, I remembered that when you were in conversation on the phone, you would stand at the window.
God bless old friend.

Our deepest sympathies to the Lehmann family. Sid was more than a colleague at PERC; he was a friend whose infectous laugh could brighten any day. He will be remembered in our prayers and in our hearts.

My deepest sympathy to the Lehmann Family--Sid and I were VHS and Rutgers classmates. I always cherished his friendship, and admired his professional skills as an attorney as the years passed. I recently read his son, Christopher's, tribute to his Dad on-line, and it is evident that Sid was an inspiration to his kids, and a rock to his family, in all respects. He will be sorely missed by his friends, colleagues, and, mostly, his family. A true gentleman--Sid left his mark, and we are all better for having known him. My deepest condolences.

Neighbor, friend, cycling companion, classmate, wrestling adversary and teacher on coach D's team, saw you at Rutgers, a few times afterward, sadly, not enough. S'long Sid. My deep felt condolences to your family, friends & colleagues.

Sid was both my colleague and mentor at PERC. I was fortunate to be his "wingman" as we fought numerous battles in New Jersey's appeals courts to define the rights and obligations of both public employers and public employees. His unparalled verbal skills as an advocate were approached only by his quick and incisive wit when interacting with colleagues, friends and family.
