Matthew Lower

1959 - 2025

Matthew James Lower, age 66, of Ionia, passed away unexpectedly from a heart attack? on October 2nd, 2025. Born on September 8th, 1959, he was a lifelong Ionia County resident?. Matt grew up on King Street next door to his grandparents. He graduated from Ionia High School in 1977.

?Matt enjoyed hunting, fishing, golfing, and camping-but especially loved deer hunting. He cherished trips to Bois Blanc Island with his family. Whether on the lake, in the woods, or sitting by a campfire, he found peace and happiness in nature. He had a fascination with aviation, which included building and flying model airplanes. He was also a talented mechanic and car enthusiast, who took great pride in restoring his 1968 Oldsmobile Cutlass.

Matt began his career working at the family's Dairy Queen and later spent many years with Frigidaire/Electrolux before retiring from AGA Marvel Refrigeration in Greenville as a Senior Designer/Programmer. In retirement, nothing brought him greater joy than spending time with his beloved wife, children, and grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Raymond and Joyce Lower, and grandparents, Esther and James D. Lower and Mabel and Merle Steele. Matt is survived by his loving wife of 41 years, Karen (Larson) Lower; children Dana Lower (Jason Ago?stini), James (Kristen) Lower, and Jennifer Lower; grandchildren Aaron, Kate, Weston, and Vera; and sisters Denise Webb and Elisabeth Steele.

A Memorial Service will be held at 11 AM. Saturday, October 18th, 2025, St. Johns Lutheran Church in Ionia. Visitation will take place one hour prior to the service, (10AM-11AM).
