Alvin Clifton Obituary

New London - In loving memory…A gem in our midst…Alvin Earle "Al" Clifton of New London suffered a major stroke Feb. 3, and held on for 18 days at Yale University Hospital. Feb. 21, 2021, Al found peace.

Al was born Oct. 2, 1962, to Jewell and William Clifton. He was predeceased by both. He is survived by six siblings, Sharon Clifton Carpenter, Beverly Clifton, Diane Clifton Davis, Greg Clifton Cummings, Ula Clifton, and Belle Clifton; two uncles, Arthur Long and Leo Belton; two aunts, Mary Belton and Ann Long; nephews, Roscoe Davis Jr., Rajai Davis, Terrence Chase, Erik Buermann, and Evan Buermann; nieces, Tylene Brown, Shakeena Davis, Mekayla Boyd, Jamie Carpenter, and Noelle Boyd; and a host of cousins.

Born with autism, Al was a kind-hearted, gentle soul who would never hurt a fly and was proud to live independently. He had an infectious smile and would not hesitate to stop and speak to anyone, anytime with a big smile. He would shake their hand and say, "Hi, my name is Alvin Clifton." He had a profound love of family. One of his favorite pastimes was hanging out with family watching baseball or college football on TV. He was an avid New York Mets fan and loved routing for the Oklahoma Sooners and Nebraska Cornhuskers football teams.

Al was a devoutly religious and dedicated churchgoer, attending church locally in New London where he loved to praise, sing, and actively take part in church services. He was very humble and full of the love of God. He loved reading scriptures, talking about the Bible, and sharing stories of Christ's love with everyone he met.

Al graduated from New London High School in 1981 and held jobs at The New London Day and Walmart. We will never stop missing him! He was truly a gem in the midst of all of us!

In lieu of flowers the family requests donations to the Autism Society (https://www.autism-society.org/) in Alvin's name. Due to COVID-19 concerns, services will be streamed online. Please see Al's Facebook page for details and updates (https://www.facebook.com/alvin.clifton.94). Interment will be private.

Precious in the sight of the LORD is the death of his faithful servants, Psalms 116:15.

In Remembrance of My Sweet Alv!

Beverly

October 2, 2021

Good morning My Sweet Alv,
Happy Birthday! I'm writing this special message because you're "special," I cu smilin! and you never forgot my birthday, lol!
For you, maybe it's just another day, as you are at peace in heaven with God and all the Saints in Glory. But for me, even though, I think of you daily and all the memories we had over the recent years and how God in His Omnipotence and Omniscience drew us together; still today, I often think about our past and don't know how and why of all of us, you were able to "find" me, the "disconnected one" and "we" become "spiritually connected" is something that my humble heart and spirit becomes overwhelmed with tears of joy and happiness to Almighty God for how he worked in my life. Actually, he worked in both our lives, because he knew he was calling you home and you had much to share. I bless God for our many, many times that you reached out to me, my Sweet Alv, Honey and I was there to talk and pray with you. I'm planting 20 trees for you and I in memory, because one day, I'd love to relocate southward and I know you would never leave CT, I'm taking you with me to GA or wherever I go, and ten in Mom's birthplace, SC, because I haven't forgotten about Mom. I didn't realize how blessed I was. For years, my prayers had been that God will partner me with someone who was humble, meek, deeply genuine, with love for Jesus Christ and I answered the phone. There you were. He did it once. He can do it again. Well, My Sweet Alv truly did love talking and want to learn about Jesus Christ. I never met anyone like him before and haven't met anyone like him since, so far. I loved being in conversations and deep spiritual prayers. When the calls dropped, we just called each other back. (smile) He had the faith of a "mustard seed," and didn't know it. Our last prayer on January 18, 2021 revealed that to me. He truly was as close as the "spiritual" person Jesus Christ would like for people to be with "Fruits of the Spirit." I can't remember that I looked upon his "outward appearance" for 30 years, therefore, I never had an "opportunity to judge the "outward" man as the world judges. The man I knew and will always remember is the "inward, spiritual man," as God showed through His Spirit. Thank you God for allowing "me" to know Sweet Alvin E. Clifton, the "inner, spiritual" man, a genuine person always with a loving smile. I always felt him "smiling" through the phone; he always laughed during our conversations. May the trees sprout firmly, spread, & grow towards heaven to Smile Upon with Joy!

I was extremely saddened to recently hear of Alvin's loss. I had the distinct honor of being a teammate of Alvin's for several years at Walmart. Alvin fulfilled a daily role in our organization that was just as important as any other, including mine as the GM. I thoroughly enjoyed talking to Alvin about sports and various other topics. He surely was independent and full of life. This tribute to Alvins life published in the Day could not have been more accurate. I will always love Alvin and think of him often. Rest In Peace, my Friend!

Alvin was my friend. We worked at Wal-Mart and were always there for each other. In the winter when Alvin forgot his gloves, he knew to come to me. I left Wal-Mart more than a year ago. If I could have stayed I would have. And I loved talking with Alvin. I am so lucky to call Alvin my friend. And his nephew Roscoe Davis, Jr. Alvin will always be in my heart.

Well my friend.... The heavens have gained another angel. We have known each other since I was 14.. No matter how long it was in between meetings you always had that infectious smile on your face. Even if we didn’t see each other for years you always gave me a big hug and smiled from ear to ear. After moving away from CT, my brother would always tell me that he saw you and you would always make him promise to say “Hello” to me. I’ll never forget you.... Rest in heaven my friend...

A gentleman that I have called my friend since I was 13 Or a bit younger, Alvin, you were always so sweet, kind, and you brought out the best in other people. You were always smiling and every time I saw you, we always had a good hello and catch up even though it may have been quick because you were always busy!! I hope you knew how much you were loved by people like me...your classmates, we who thought you were AWESOME!! And if you never knew, God is showing you now! I personally loved seeing you anytime I ran into you, you made my day. This world is definitely a little darker without you here. But I am picturing you in Heaven with total freedom!!! Meeting up with old friends and relatives and just being free in the face of God!! Fly high my friend...fly high! You'll never be forgotten.
