Amelia Scarles Obituary

Mystic - Amelia (Ponticelli) Scarles, 49, of Mystic, beloved wife of Dr. James Scarles, passed away Saturday, June 30, 2012, at home.

Born in New York, N.Y., she was the proud mother of Marie Scarles and George Scarles, both of Mystic. She had lived in Mystic since 1991.

Amelia was a dietician for Shoreline Surgical Associates in Middletown for four years. Amelia loved watercolor painting, drawing, gardening, and she was active in the Terri Brodeur Breast Cancer Foundation as a medical tent coordinator. She was an avid reader and a brilliant cook who loved to entertain her loving network of family and friends. She took pride in her daughter, who recently graduated from Wesleyan University, and her son, who currently attends Connecticut College.

Besides her husband and children, she leaves her parents, Domenico and Marianna Ponticelli of Mystic; sister, Josephine Amleto and her husband, Dr. Mario Amleto, of Middletown; and her father-in-law and mother-in law, George and Nanna Scarles of Forest Hills, N.Y.

The Scarles family will receive friends from 1 to 3 p.m. and 5 to 7 p.m. on Wednesday, July 4, from at the Mystic Funeral Home, Route 1, 51 Williams Ave., Mystic.

A Funeral Mass will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday at St. Mary Mother of the Redeemer Church, 69 Groton Long Point Road, Groton. Entombment will follow at St. Mary Cemetery, New London.

Dearest Dr. Scarles and family, I know how much that you loved your wife and kids. I heard it in your voice when you spoke of them over the years. I could see the love and pride that shown in your eyes when speaking of them. I know that you and your family suffered during this, along with Lia, as her illness returned and progressed. I can't imagine the pain the she felt during this time. She is at peace now and she is no longer in pain. I hope that you along with your now grown children, can take solace in that, and remember the love that you always shared, along with the good memories. There is no answer as to why these things happen, but I hope that prayer and help from friends and family will help you through the most difficult of times. Norm and I are so very sorry for your loss and we pray for for you and your family. I don't think we ever heal, I think that we learn to move on with faith, in the Lord. God Bless you and your children, family and friends. Donna and Norman Betty
