Andrew Terracciano Obituary

Waterford - Andrew "Andy" J. Terracciano, 79, of Waterford, passed away March 28, 2015, surrounded by his loving family after a short illness. Andy was the devoted and loving husband to Ingrid E. Terracciano for nearly 59 years and the founder of the well-known shoreline bakery, Flanders Donut & Bake Shop East Lyme.

Born Sept. 18, 1935, as the son of the late Anthony Terracciano and Henrietta "Alice" (Lignetta) Terracciano, Andy was a fourth generation baker. He owned and operated Flanders Donut & Bake Shop alongside his wife Ingrid and four children for 30 years until his son, Greg, decided to carry on the family tradition. His donuts, bagels, pastries, and cakes have been shared with generations of patrons in the shoreline community and beyond.

Andy took great pride in his family, bakery, pigeon hobby, and was an enchanting storyteller. He was a loving and devoted husband, father, and opa. He took joy in cheering his kids and grandkids on from the sidelines at their sporting events. He was a life member of the New London Lodge of the Elks 360 and a member of the German Cultural Society. He served in the U.S. Army and was stationed in Germany when he met his wife Ingrid.

Since the age of six, he has passionately raised domestic show and flying pigeons. He was the founder of three pigeon clubs, the Eastern Connecticut Pigeon Association, New London County Racing Club, and Thames Valley Racing Club. He was one of the organizers of the National Shortface Tumbler and a member of the National Pigeon Association. His favorite breed was the English Shortface Baldheads. He was awarded the Master Breeders Award in 1995 by the National Pigeon Association. It was said that he had the best Shortface Baldheads in the world.

Andy is survived by his wife, Ingrid, his lifelong partner and love of his life. He is also survived by his four children, a son, Greg Terracciano, wife, Nancee and their children, AJ, Ryan, Danny, and Laura; a daughter, Gina Terracciano (Feeney) and her children, Brittney and Nick; a daughter, Tina Steele, husband, Richard, and their children, Brian, Scott, and Jason; and a son, Tony Terracciano, wife, Christine, and their children, Sophia, Rocco, and Vienna, all of Waterford. He is also survived by a sister, Patricia Romano of New London, many nieces, nephews, and many close friends.

He was predeceased by his sister, Marie and brother, Angelo "Gene."

Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, March 31, at Impelliteri-Malia Funeral Home, 84 Montauk Ave., New London. Funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, April 1, at St. Agnes Church, 22 Haigh Ave., Niantic. Interment will follow at Jordan Cemetery, Boston Post Road, Waterford.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to the American Heart Association or the New London Burn Foundation, 239 Bank St., New London, CT 06320.

I am saddened to hear about Andy's passing of which I just learnt.
Ingrid and Andy visited with me in the 1990 when they were on a family visit to Germany. I took them to see breeders of English Shortfaces in my area of Germany. Andy's birds have set the standard for Shortface Balds so his name will not be forgotten by the fancy.
My deep and sincere condolences from Germany, er möge in Frieden ruhen.

Sincerest sympathy to the Terracciano family. I remember babysitting for the kids (Greg, etc.) many years ago. The bakery was and is the finest in the area. I am certain you will miss him, but I know he loved his wife and kids and so that love should bring you sweet memories. His donuts will continue to bring joy to our corner of the world as Greg continues his passion. May you find some joy in what you had, although right now you are feeling pain, and have my utmost sympathy.

Though it was only in the past couple years that I started addressing Andy as "Opa," that's how I always referred to him, because whenever I saw Opa he made me feel like family. I feel enormously blessed to have known someone so committed to the happiness of his loved ones (wife, children, grandchildren, friends). My thoughts and prayers are with his extraordinary family.

DEAREST ANDY -- WE ARE GOING TO MISS YOU AND ALL YOUR STORIES. LOVE YOU

Mary Anne Alfieri

March 30, 2015

To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say...
but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.
I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.
Here, there's no more tears of sadness; here is just eternal love.

Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I'm with you every morning, noon and night.
That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through,
God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."

It's good to have you back again; you were missed while you were gone.
As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on.
I need you here badly; you're part of my plan.
There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man.

God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.
And when you lie in bed at night, the day's chores put to flight.
God and I are closest to you....in the middle of the night.

When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years
because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.
But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.

I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
But if I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.
But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.

There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.
It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too...
that as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.

If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain,
then you can say to God at night......"My day was not in vain."
And now I am contented....that my life has been worthwhile,
knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile.

So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low,
just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.
When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.

And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.
