Ann Keating Obituary

New London - Ann Marie (Foley) Keating of New London, passed away Saturday, Sept. 12, 2020, at her residence. She was born Aug. 20, 1940, in New London, the daughter of Timothy F. and Mary Connor Foley.

Mrs. Keating was a lifelong resident of New London, graduating from New London High School, the University of Connecticut with a bachelor of science in mathematics and physics, and a master's degree in mathematics from Connecticut College. She began her lifelong teaching career at Norwich Free Academy in the early 1960s, until 1968. She simultaneously taught evening classes at Mitchell College, before becoming a professor and head of the mathematics department for a total of over 40 years. She was dedicated to educating her Mitchell College students in mathematics, statistics and physics.

Mrs. Keating married Lawrence J. Keating Jr. on June 22, 1968, in St. Mary Star of the Sea Church. In addition to her husband, Lawrence, who survives her, she leaves her two daughters, Catherine and Christine and her husband Christian Ghiglia; her two sons and wives, Timothy and Senaida of Virginia and Lawrence and Renée; and four grandsons: Almir, Connor, Declan and Owen. She is survived by her two brothers, Paul J. Foley and Timothy F. Foley; as well as her sisters-in-law, Mary Keating and Eileen Coffee.

Mrs. Keating was active in numerous charitable and civic organizations, and most recently served as chairwoman of the New London Zoning Board of Appeals.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, there are no calling hours. A funeral Mass will be held at a future date at St. Mary Star of the Sea Church in New London. Burial in the family plot at St. Mary Cemetery, New London, will be private. Donations may be made to St. Joseph School, in lieu of flowers.

I will never forget how Mrs. Keating was always welcoming to me and helped me feel at home on crest street by including me in so many family activities and was such a nice friend and neighbor to my grandparents the McCarthys. My mom loved you very much also. We all admired your couregeous way of keeping your family together and being a math professor and an optimist. All my love to you dear Keating family and especially a big hug to Christine my childhood friend and Catherine who encouraged me to paint and Timmy who always gave me rides to St Bernards as well as Larry and Mr. Keating who had a kind heart. GOD BLESS YOU DURING THIS TIME OF MOURNING. MAY God send you Angels of comfort and courage during this trying time. In Jesus Name I pray.

Dear Mr. Keating, Catherine, Tim, Christine, Larry, and Paul and Tim,
I'm so sorry to hear this sad, sad news. Ann was like a second mother to me as a boy, with many fun and crazy times spent at the Keating house and at Mitchell Beach. She had a great sense of humor and an infectious laugh. I will always remember her for her kindness and generosity, and as an integral part of the Berkeley Ave/Crest St. neighborhood of my childhood.
Wishing you all the very best!

Ann was a beautiful soul who gave to so many. Her kindness could be seen in the many groups she volunteered to. She enjoyed her children and help others who trusted in her. I will miss her afternoon talks in the summertime as she sat in front of her home. Thank you Ann for allowing me into your life. You shall be missed

Larry--

Ann was an angel, an active part of our H.S. Class. I will miss seeing her and you at our reunions. Living in Florida, and being a caregiver for my wife, I doubt that I will see you again. Ann was born the day before me, always older by one day. But, I remember her fondly as a member of the Class of 1958, and you as a member of "our gang"! So sorry...

Dear Larry & the entire circle of Ann Marie’s family ‘n’ friends,

Larry and Ann Marie are ol’ St. Mary’s friends, whom I have not seen in a number of years, but neither time nor distance diminishes the fond memories I have of both!!! Ann Marie was a complete delight to talk with...scintillating and a wee bit cynical, but always delightfully engaging. And she was as lovely on the outside as the light that shone from within.

And so, understanding the hole left behind by so loved a wife, sister, mom, grandmom, ‘n’ friend, regardless forewarning, pray this helps some wee bit...to allow...enable...the grief! And it will come...indulge it...it is necessary, but it is, also, a measure of the impact this lost love had on your life! So truly sorry to hear about Ann Marie. Definitely keepin’ y’all in my prayers that Christ hold you close in this trying time!

When my mother died, even after a years-long battle with cancer, I was shattered by the loss...inconsolable...she was my mentor! BUT, "If your faith assures you she's in heaven, then what are the tears all about?!?" I hold eternity with God a precious, cherished, and hard-won prize...but...in the interim, the answer lies below.

SELFISH TEARS
(I EULOGIZE MY BELOVED MOTHER - MARCH, 1989)

Today we cry...must admit they're selfish tears.
You see...our faith assures your journey's done.
But it's not for you we mourn, at all, my dear;
It's for those of us you've left behind...alone!!!

We share your joy...share your happiness at rest,
Your painful fears now for forever stilled.
You've fought the good fight, passed the final test,
But you've left behind a hole that can't be filled!!!

So, until we each rejoin you some someday,
And, while your memory buoys us through those years,
We'll miss you...but continue on our way,
And, from time to time, we'll cry our selfish tears!!!
Ray Hamilton ~*~ March 19, 1989

My sincerest condolences...fondest prayers,

Ann was a colleague at Mitchell and also my stats professor. Without her help, kindness and encouragement I would have never passed the class. Ann’s care and compassion for her students both in out of the classroom was evident. She was also a wonderful person to work with and we shared stories about living in New London. When I drive down the old neighborhood, I think of Ann. Please accept my sincere condolences - Ann was one of the best.

Condolences to Larry and children. I was both a friend since grammar school and a student of Ann's at Mitchell. I would like to point to a very progressive teacher Ann was at the college level. She wanted her students to learn how to use the math tools she taught you, and not to bother memorizing something like theorems you could just lookup (and today just Google it). At Ann's tests, midterms, and finals she would say “Bring Any Book You Want (which you could look up anything)”. Rest in Peace Ann Keating – from me and my wife Elaine!
