She was born in Straide, County Mayo, Ireland, Oct. 28, 1911, the daughter of Patrick and Anna Cogger King.
She was the widow of John F. McCarthy, who died March 3, 1973.
Mrs. McCarthy had been employed at Lawrence & Memorial Hospital, retiring in 1979. She was a communicant of St. Joseph Church in New London and volunteered for Lawrence & Memorial Auxiliary, Hospice of Southeastern Connecticut, and the Red Cross. She enjoyed time with Shoreline Adult Day Center in Waterford. She was well known for her Irish wit and hospitality.
She is survived by two daughters, Sheila McCarthy and Kathleen McCarthy, both of New London; a son, John "Jack" McCarthy and his wife, Lucille, of Cromwell; a sister, Mary Bowes of New London; four grandchildren, Sharon Aston and her husband, Bruce, of West Hartford; Timothy McCarthy and his wife, Pam, of Yonkers, N.Y.; Kevin McCarthy of Cromwell; Brian McCarthy and his wife, Kelley, of Cromwell; and eight great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by three brothers, John, Martin, and Nicholas King and two sisters, Barbara Grady and Kathleen Lowe.
The funeral will assemble at 10:15 a.m. Monday at the Thomas L. Neilan & Sons Funeral Home, 12 Ocean Ave., New London and proceed to a Mass of Christian Burial in St. Joseph Church at 11 a.m. Interment will follow in St. Mary Cemetery. Calling hours are from 3 to 7 p.m. on Sunday.
Flowers are acceptable, or a donation in her name may be made to the VNA of SE CT, 403 North Frontage Road, Waterford CT 06385; the L&M Development Fund, 365 Montauk Ave., New London CT 06320; or to the Shoreline Adult Day Center, 1 Beechwood Dr., Waterford CT 06385.
