Anthony Warren Obituary

New London - Anthony "Tony" Warren, 83, died Nov. 6, 2025. He was born in Boston, Mass., Dec. 8, 1941, the son of Alma King Warren.

Anthony began working at the young age of seven, shining shoes in Boston and selling newspapers. As Anthony got a little older, he worked for a dry cleaner's business where the owner took him down to get his driver's license at sixteen. When Anthony was old enough, he enlisted in the U.S. Army and received basic training at Fort Dix, N.J. Shortly after that, he was stationed with the third Armored Cavalry Regiment out of Fort Meade and deployed to Germany during the Berlin Crisis, serving in the Third Squadron. He routinely made border patrols and would go out to mark tank trails for the regiment's movements.

Anthony would serve three years in the U.S. Army and came home to Boston. Within a few months, he enlisted in the U.S. Coast Guard in 1964, where he served 20 years and met the love of his life, Dorothy, while stationed in New London. Anthony served in Vietnam on the gun boats in the Mekong Delta and waterways, with Armed Forces Police in Boston, training recruits as a company commander at Cape May, N.J., and at the Coast Guard Station in Miami, conducting counterdrug operations/search and rescue, and many other assignments, retiring in 1984, with the rank of chief. After his military service, Anthony worked for the civil service at the Groton New London Sub Base as a crane operator and rigger for many years.

While Anthony was semi-retired, he was always working, mowing lawns, painting, washing gravestones, power washing houses, and attending church regularly at St. Patrick's in Norwich, where he made rosary beads for people at church and at St. Patrick's school. Anthony enjoyed working and staying busy, and spending time with his family.

Anthony is predeceased by his wife, Dorothy Warren; and daughter-in-law Joann Warren. He is survived by his sons, Stephen and his wife Wendy of Norwich; and Michael Warren; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren; a brother, Ronnie Warren; and two sisters, Jackie Berryman and Diane of Kentucky.

A graveside service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 15, at St. Mary Cemetery, Jefferson Avenue, New London. There are no calling hours. The Thomas L. Neilan & Sons Funeral Home, 12 Ocean Avenue, New London, is assisting the family with the arrangements.

Rest in Peace Tony. A life well lived

Lori Duncan

November 12, 2025

Uncle Tony was the uncle I was closest to. He was also very close to my mom, Jackie and aunt Diane. I have so many fond memories of him and my aunt Dottie with their sons Michael and Stephen coming up from CT to visit. I also made many trips down as well. I still have memories of his retirement from the coast guard.
My heart is broken but I know uncle Tony is at peace and with his loving wife Dottie and daughter-in-law Joann. I know we will see each other again my deepest condolences to Michael and Stephen along with all the grandchildren.
