Barrows Peale Obituary

Stonington - Barrows Peale, "Barry", as he was known by most, passed away on Jan. 25, 2010.

He was the son of the late William Barrows Peale and Lorna Stevens, born in New York, N.Y. on May 26, 1937. He grew up in Summit, N.J. and Darien, Conn., and spent childhood summers in Quogue, N.Y.

He graduated from Harvard College in 1959, where he was coxswain of the undefeated varsity heavyweight rowing crew. His love of sailing led him to a long career as an owner of Milford Boat Works, in Milford, Conn., and eventually to work in restoration at the Mystic Seaport Museum.

His long and very happy marriage to Mary Ellen Gates began on June 18, 1960, and ended when she passed away in November 2007.

He is survived by his son, William Barrows Peale; his daughter, Barbara Farnum Peale; and four loving grandchildren, Charlotte, William, Wesley and George.

His family plans to hold a memorial service for him in the spring.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Mystic Seaport Museum in Mystic, www.mysticseaport.org.

Barry, just knowing you were there gave us a sense of peace and continuity. You will be greatly missed and we know that you are with dear Moo and your brother Stevens, sailing off for parts unknown. We send our heart's best love to WB and Barbara and their children.

A true character and free spirit has gone too early.Barry's family, the hills of Vermont, the boatyards and sailing waters of Long Island Sound have lost a good one.Barry and Moo are probably gunk-holing in some exotic location right now..Jonathan Mix[Branford,Ct]
