Betty Sokol Obituary
Mrs. Sokol was born in Norwich, the only child of Abraham and Mollie (Rabinovitch) Hyman.
She is an alumnus of Norwich Free Academy, Connecticut College, and Eastern Connecticut State Teachers College, and earned a master's degree from the University of Connecticut.
Betty spent a lifetime of service dedicated to many worthwhile causes. She served on the boards of Music for Children, YWCA, Red Cross, Beth El Sisterhood, League of Women Voters, and the Miami Beach Social Services Committee. She was a lifetime member of the National Women's Committee of Brandies University and the Lawrence & Memorial Auxiliary.
In addition to her professional life as a teacher & reading consultant, she also owned and operated a travel agency and for many years was a real estate broker.
In addition to her parents and her husband, she was predeceased by her daughter, Mollie Sokol Ellis.
She is survived by her daughter, Louise Sokol of New London.
The funeral will be held at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 24, at Temple Beth El, 660 Ocean Ave., New London. Burial will follow in Beth El Cemetery, Groton.
Shiva will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday at her daughter's residence.
The family suggests memorial contributions be sent to the NFA Alumni Association, 305 Broadway, Norwich CT 06360.
The Thomas L. Neilan & Sons Funeral Home, 12 Ocean Ave., New London, is assisting the family with the arrangements.
