Brian Clancy Obituary

East Lyme - Brian Stephen Clancy, 63, died unexpectedly at home in East Lyme, Oct. 19, 2024. He was born July 18, 1961 in New London, the sixth of seven kids raised by Paul and Eleanor Clancy.

Brian grew up in East Lyme and went through the school system there, where he stood out in sports, in shop class, and with girls. He didn't waste any time after graduation in 1979 - he'd already been training for a career as a carpenter since age 12, working side-by-side with his dad.

Brian had a lot of natural talent, but what people probably remember most is his razor-sharp wit and the way he could drop a wildly inappropriate joke when you least expected it. He loved to travel, see new places, and reconnect with old friends - and he had a gift for making new ones wherever he went.

He was married once, briefly, and although it didn't last, his love for Becky stayed with him. Brian didn't have kids of his own (that we know of) but he adored them and connected with them in a way that was truly genuine.

Losing people hit Brian hard. He was predeceased by his parents; his brother, Paul; sisters, Donna and Darlene; his niece, Patra; and his nephew, Jesse. He also deeply mourned the loss of his dog, Coogan, and his cat, Sparky - both his best buddies. Brian is survived by his sisters, Patti (Peter), Karen (Patrick) and Maureen (Gregg); and one local cousin, Margo (Fred); along with a wide circle of friends and family who loved him.

Please join us in celebrating Brian's life from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday, July 18,his actual birthday, at the American Legion, 16 York Ave., Niantic. No need for flowers or donations. Just come to hear the tributes, raise a glass, swap stories, and help us send him off with love and laughter - he would expect no less!

Brian was always a good guy. I lived on N. Bride Brook Rd and missed the bus a lot and had to walk to school. Brian would always stop to give me a ride in that olive green van he had back then.

Brian n I were very close friends for years. While in ELHS, we'd go for really long bike rides all over the area. We used to pack a lunch often on the weekends n decide where we'd go, usually after meeting at the same spot on Scott Rd. One of our very favorite spots was Chapman Falls in Devil's Hopyard. We'd lock up our bikes, eat our lunch, & throw our trash in one of the garbage cans. I recall sitting at the bottom of the falls listening to the water flowing over the rocks w Brian. We'd pick a trail where we'd walk for hours, talking about whatever came to mind. We simply enjoyed one another's company. Time went on n our lives changed YET we kept in touch via phone/computer. I was very saddened to hear of my dear friend's passing. I will always hold all of my memories of our times together close to my heart. He will definitely be missed so much by me. My very dear friend Brian. Yes. We had some special times for sure. He was an important part of my life. So sad that I will not be able to attend my special friends Celebration of Life. July 18th is also my dad's birthday. I will be with him for a few days in New Hampshire at this time. I will be there though, in thought. Love you Brian! Always have. Always will. Val
