Charles Murkett Obituary

Norwich - Charles H. Murkett, 83, husband of Betty (Knight) Murkett of Venice, Fla., formerly of Norwich, died Friday evening, Nov. 26, 2010, in Venice.

Born in East Hampton on June 18, 1927, he was the son of the late Sereno and Loretta (Hale) Murkett. He was a graduate of Norwich Free Academy, class of 1945, and was honorably discharged from the U.S. Marine Corps with the rank of corporal having served during World War II and received the Purple Heart. He retired from Connecticut Light and Power after 38 years as maintenance coordinator, starting in the lab and rising to foreman of shutdowns and overhauls to power plants throughout New England.

An avid huner and fisherman, he made trips to Alaska, Wyoming, Montana, Maryland, and Canada, where he hunted elk, geese, bear, mule deer, and fished for salmon and trout. He excelled in skeet shooting and was a member of the Groton Sportsmen's Club, Sprague Rod & Gun Club, Bozrah Fish & Game Club, and the Elks.

In June of 1958 in Guilford, he was united in marriage to Claire (Chartier) Murkett, who died on Feb. 22, 1992.

On June 10, 1995, in Sacred Heart Church in Taftville, he was united in marriage to Betty (Knight) Robb Murkett of Venice, who survives along with a daughter, Cynthia Ann Murkett Hutchings of Lempster, N.H.; two stepsons, James Arremony and George Arremony of Michigan; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews; and other family members.

He was precedeased by two brothers, Clarence and Robert Murchett.

Visitation will be from 7 to 9 p.m. this evening Sunday at the Labenski Funeral Home, 107 Boswell Ave., Norwich. A Mass of Chirstian Burial will be at 9 a.m. on Monday at Sacred Heart Church, Providence St., Taftville, meeting directly at the church. Interment with military honors will be in Pachaug Cemetery, Griswold.

In lieu of flowers, donations are asked to be made in his memory to Sacred Heart Church Center, 156 Providence St., Taftville CT 06380.
