Craig Burge Obituary

Stonington - Craig W. Burge, 70, of Stonington, passed away Aug. 5, 2024, at Lawrence + Memorial Hospital after battling Bone and Lung Cancer. Born in New London Feb. 18, 1954, the son of Betty (Forbes) Burge and Edward Burge (both deceased).

Craig is survived by his sons, Craig W. Burge II and wife Sharon of Nashua, N.H. and Keith Burge of Stonington. In addition, he is survived by his sisters, Karon Dolan of Groton and Kathy Point of Pawcatuck. He leaves behind two grandchildren, C.J. and Kara Burge; and many other relatives and friends.

Craig is predeceased by his beloved wife, Suzan, who passed away last month. Craig and Suzan had been married for close to fifty years and were inseparable. Craig has joined her in heaven and their pain is no more. Craig is also predeceased by his brother, Edward Burge Jr.; and his sister, Karol Tootell. Craig's love for his family was immense and he will be deeply missed.

Craig was a police officer and served on the Stonington Police Department for over thirty-five years. Simply put, he loved his job! He felt that it was an honor and privilege to serve the citizens of Stonington. He helped so many people over the course of his career, not even realizing it at times. Craig was proud to wear the uniform and he exemplified courage, dedication and respect.

Craig was level-headed, patient and pleasant to talk to. He enjoyed fishing, watching movies, tending to his vegetable garden and viewing the stars through his telescope. Craig also liked to travel and went on a cross-country car trip with his wife shortly after he retired from the force.

Rest in Peace, Craig. "Perhaps they are not stars but rather openings in heaven where the love of our lost ones shines down to let us know they are happy."

In honor of Craig's wishes, the family has chosen not to have services at this time. Byles Memorial Home, New London is assisting with the arrangements. Please visit www.Byles.com to sign the guestbook or to share a memory.

My heart was heavy when I learned about Suzan's passing last month. We went to school together and reconnected years later on FB. I know she so looked forward to caring for Craig when he got out of the hospital in July but only 3 short days later she was gone. Then, to learn that Craig has joined her brought more sorrow in my heart for their children and extended family. Please know that by God's grace, Suzan and Craig are together and that one day we will all meet again in the Lord's kingdom. I pray the memories sustain all those who loved and cared for them. Thank you for your service Craig. Suzan thank you for your friendship and kind words You will both rest now now in the eternal light of Our Lord.

I´ve known Craig for decades. As a Westerly Police Officer we had many occasions to meet and talk " on the bridge" and became friends - as were most of us on both departments. He was a sincere and caring police officer and will be greatly missed. Rest in peace brother. Until we meet again...

My sympathy to Craig's family. Craig was as committed to serving others as anyone I have ever met in my life. He was an exemplary Police Officer and a credit to his department and the Town of Stonington. His commitment, tenaciousness and thoroughness made him one of the most effective investigators with whom I ever had the privilege of working. He will be missed by the many people he helped along the way.

I would like to express my sorrow at the passing of Craig. While I did not know his beloved wife, Suzann, I send condolences. I worked with Craig, both as a dispatcher, as well as a police officer. He was always quiet, kind, humble and respectful. I can’t say enough about his dry sense of humor! I do not like to write comments on a funeral forum but I didn’t know how else to let his loved ones know how much I thought of him, both as a police officer and a human being. He was one in a million. May his memory be eternal.
