Daniel Gillen Obituary
He was a kind and generous man, a wonderful father and grandfather, and friend to many. Born in 1920, in New York, he was the son of the late Edith (Melanson) Greiner.
He was a World War II submarine veteran on the USS Thresher (SS-200). After the war, he attended the New York Art Students League on the GI bill. One of his paintings "Grace" was selected for the Diamond Jubilee Exhibition of Fine Arts at the National Gallery of Art in New York City in 1950.
Dan worked most of his life as a lab technician with Pfizer until his retirement in 1982. He was an avid sailor, sailing his Golden Eye sailboat in Fisher's Island Sound whenever possible.
He is survived by his four children, Margaret and Patrick Ryan of Fairfax, Calif., Michael Gillen, Mara G. Beckwith, both of Mystic and Maureen and Robert Lamb of Branford; grandchildren, Carrie and Brad Sheridan, Chad and Morgan Beckwith, Kate Ryan, Edesse Lamb, and Hunter, Matthew and Grace Gillen; and a great-granddaughter, Scarlett Mae Sheridan.
His family will receive friends from 11 a.m. to noon Saturday, March 29, at the Mystic Funeral Home, Route 1, Mystic. Luncheon for family and friends to follow at the Mystic VFW. Burial will be private.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Pawcatuck Neighborhood Center, 27 Chase St., Pawcatuck, CT 06379.
