Daniel Stockwell Obituary

Norwich - Daniel R. Stockwell, 74, passed away unexpectedly Aug. 14, 2025. He will be remembered for love of his family, lifelong passion for golf, and many contributions to the community he loved.

Danny was the beloved husband of Annette (Fleming) Stockwell. Together, they shared more than 30 years of love, friendship and laughter in a life filled with family, traditions and adventures. Nothing made Danny happier than the whole family gathered together.

When he married Annette, he welcomed three children into his life, Laurie (Hamel) Bentley, Katie (Hamel) Zannini, and Thomas Hamel and wife Labecka, caring for them as his own. He was a proud grandfather to Katrina Zannini, Emily Zannini and Logan Hamel, Joseph and Avery Person. Danny is also survived by his sisters, Clare Michon (Lee) and Ellen Mizeur (Leon); along with nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.

Danny grew up in Norwich, attending local schools. He graduated from Norwich Free Academy in 1969. He was active in class activities, staying in touch with classmates and friends. He was also a natural at making people feel welcome, whether they were lifelong friends or people he had just met.

He went on to Quinnipiac College, then earned his degree from Central Connecticut State. He served honorably in the U.S. Navy from 1971 to 1975. Danny worked for Drake Petroleum/Xtra Mart of Providence, Goldsboro (N.C.) Municipal Golf Course, and most recently at River Ridge Golf Club in Griswold.

Danny played Ss. Peter & Paul league baseball, but golf was his passion. He started playing at age ten, became All-Capital District Conference at NFA in 1968, and team captain in 1969 when he led NFA to a CDC title while winning the individual championship. He was the 1970 Quinnipiac MVP as a freshman.

His first championship was the 1968 NGC Presidents Cup. In the Navy, he won championships in 1973-1974. He later won five NGC Championships and the 1971 Rose Arts Festival title. He also achieved ten holes-in-one. At NGC, Danny was Tournament Chairman, member of the Board of Governors and Members Club President. He was President of the Norwich Softball League; life member and House Chair of the Thamesville AC; and President of the Norwich Sports Hall of Fame into which he was inducted in1998, 12 years after his father, Samuel Stockwell.

Danny's mix of humor, honesty and enthusiasm reflected a man who cared deeply about the things and people he loved most and received his full attention. His life became even fuller with the arrival of grandchildren, whose games he attended regularly, cheering their accomplishments and sharing their stories with pride. Summer picnics with his sisters and their families were among his happiest times.

Danny will be remembered at 10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 23, at a Mass in the Cathedral of St. Patrick, Norwich, followed by a reception at Long Shots Cafe in Uncasville.

In my senior year and Dan´s junior year (1968) we played together (as 1and 2, respectively) on the NFA golf team against the 1 and 2s of the other schools). I believe we both won all our matches that year. Last summer (2024) our mutual friend Cas Grygorciewicz organized a luncheon for mostly basketball players and Dan came bringing a photo from the 1968 NFA Yearbook of the golf team. I had not seen Dan for years and I was genuinely touched by him joining us and bringing the photo. Dan was truly a great guy and will be greatly missed by his family and friends.

Danny was a special person to everyone who knew him. I knew him back in the 70's and then decades later we met at again at Annette's 50th NFA reunion. We corresponded a bit and then I remember one day he called me and we talked for an hour. It was like we never lost touch. Danny accomplished a lot in his life.... I'll remember his humility and his authentic interest in the people he encountered during his life. If you knew Danny, you liked him. RIP Danny.
