David Cooney Obituary

East Haddam - David Michael Cooney, beloved son, brother, uncle, and friend was freed from the bonds of his earthly existence on June 9, 2009.

David was born and raised in Hartford and was a long-time resident of East Haddam. David attended St. Joseph Cathedral grammar school in Hartford where he was a member of the New England CYO championship basketball team. He graduated from South Catholic High School in Hartford, and attended college at St. Francis in Biddeford, Maine. He was employed for decades by Connecticut Yankee Power in East Haddam, in plant and site security. David was an avid outdoorsman and cyclist. He knew and loved the roads, trails and rivers of Connecticut and New England well. We will always remember him fondly on a racing bicycle, in a canoe or kayak, or hiking a remote trail.

David is survived by his mother, Eileen Newton Cooney of Mystic; his siblings, Eugene A. and Deborah Cooney of Southington, Thomas M. and Lisa Weller Cooney of Philadelphia, William N. and Jami Cooney of Cromwell, Christine M. Cooney of Mystic, and Henry F. Cooney, Jr. of Noank, and numerous nieces and nephews.

David joins his father, Henry Sr., his brothers, Vincent DePaul, Stephen Joseph, and his sister, Mary Eileen in loving, eternal repose.

The family will receive friends from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. on Friday, June 12, 2009, at the Mystic Funeral Home, Route 1, Mystic followed by a funeral mass at 10 a.m. at St. Patrick Church, 32 East Main St., Mystic. Immediately following the mass, a short reception will follow at the St. Patrick Church Hall. Following the reception, services will continue with the interment at Mt. St. Benedict Cemetery, Cottage Grove Rd. in Bloomfield at 2:30 pm.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Connecticut River Watershed Council.

To the Cooney Family,
I just heard the news of Dave's passing. My thoughts and prayers go out to you. "Byrd" was a big part of the greater-BVT Gang of the Casey-Cooney-Farell-Horvath-Tormey Families during the 60's and 70's. Great memories of Dave's smiling face on some of our adventures down to the beach or out to Nantucket Island or down to Southern Connecticut State College or at the canoe shop.

Although it has been many years since I have spent time with Dave, I do have fond childhood memories of the times with my uncle and am saddened for those that were close to him.

I attended St Joseph Cathedral School with Stephen and Thomas in the late 60's. I didn't know David, but I'm sure he was as good a person as Thomas and Stephen. May God bless the family in this time of grief and may he rest in peace.

To Mrs. Cooney and all the Cooney Family,

Our hearts go out to you at this incredably sad time.

David was a gem! So sweet...so caring and in his own special way...so very, very funny!

He was a gentleman and one that certainly I will miss, very much... seeing around Mystic.

There's a thread that runs thru all the Cooney children characters...and that's the ability to love and be loved.

It was a pleasure getting to know David...though certainly...way too short of time.

But I guess God wanted to get that party started up in heaven...sooner than later.

I know he's in Good company! :)

If you need anything, please call.

Peace & God Bless You

Marie & Kip Wiley & Family.
