Donald Dishaw Obituary

Waterford - Donald L. Dishaw, 86, of Waterford, passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by his loving family, Friday, Dec. 26, 2025.

Don was born June 14, 1939, in Ogdensburg, N.Y., the son of Richard and Rose (Pray) Dishaw. Alongside his brother, Thomas, Don enjoyed a childhood reminiscent of Huck Finn, filled with fishing, hunting, boating, and countless adventures, one of which even included having a pet bear, a story family and friends never tire of hearing.

During his elementary school years, his family relocated to Derby Line, Vt. He graduated from Derby Academy in 1957, and proudly served in the United States Navy from 1958 to 1962.

In September 1965, Don married Virginia Coulombe Dishaw. Together they shared more than 60 years of marriage, making their home in Niantic and later in Waterford.

Don retired from Dow Chemical in 1996, where he worked in management and later as a senior security administrator for many years. Following retirement, he continued working in security at Mohegan Sun and later served as a funeral attendant for Thomas L. Neilan & Sons Funeral Homes.

A devoted community member, Don volunteered as a Big Brother, youth baseball coach, and Boy Scout leader. He was active with many local service organizations, including Care and Share of East Lyme and the New London Community Meal Center. Don was a dedicated member of the Lions Club, Knights of Columbus, and the St. Vincent de Paul Society. Always willing to lend a hand, he offered his help with a cheerful spirit and a warm, welcoming smile.

Don had a lifelong passion for UConn basketball and Notre Dame football. He found great joy in gardening, caring for his yard, tending his bird feeders, and spending time with family and friends. He especially cherished time at the beach, clamming, boating, and traveling. Family vacations to Cape Cod and Martha's Vineyard held a special place in his heart. Born on Flag Day, Don was deeply patriotic and proudly displayed the American flag in his front yard year-round.

Don will be remembered for his infectious smile, kind heart, sense of humor, and the deep love and devotion he shared with his family.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Virginia Dishaw of Waterford; his daughter, Kristine Dishaw (Carl Bisson); his sons, Michael Dishaw (Amanda King) and Marc Dishaw (Kristin); and his cherished grandchildren: Courtney, Nevin, Kylie, and Prestin Dishaw. He is also survived by his cousins, Tim Dishaw and Shelly Dishaw Donahoe; as well as many extended family members. He was predeceased by his brother, Thomas Dishaw.

Calling hours will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday, Jan. 9, at Thomas L. Neilan & Sons East Lyme Funeral Home, 48 Grand Street, Niantic. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan.10, at St. Agnes Church. Interment will take place at the Connecticut State Veterans Cemetery in Middletown at a later date.

The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the compassionate staff at Smilow Cancer Center in Waterford, and to the VNA and Hospice care teams, whose kindness, dedication, and support meant so much during this time.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Vincent de Paul, c/o St. Agnes Church, 22 Haigh Avenue, or to the Connecticut Cancer Foundation, 15 North Main Street, Old Saybrook, Connecticut. Condolences may be shared on Don's memorial page at www.neilanfuneralhome.com

I worked with Don for many years years at our Employer Dow Chemical in Gales Ferry Ct. , Don was a great guy, I would see him often at our town beaches in East Lyme where I worked as a seasonal Supervisor for ELPR in my retirement years, we had many chats about our favorite teams , UConn Basketball and Notre Dame Football , Don will be missed by all that knew him

The story of the connection between the Mace and Dishaw families is one I have told so many times. Starting in little Morristown NY and continuing to Niantic Ct. with a mix of Bonita Springs Fla. Even the time we unknowingly ended up on the same plane to get on different cruises was ironic.
Loved Don´s smile and laugh and his stories were the best.
The world lost a good man. May he rest in peace.
