She was born Feb. 6, 1916 in Norwich, the daughter of the late Gustave R. and Amanda N. Sandberg.
Doris attended the Mt. Pleasant St. and Elizabeth St. Schools, graduating in the Class of 1930. She attended the Norwich Free Academy graduating in 1934 as class secretary.
She was married to Leonard D. Royce on Sept. 14, 1940 at the First Baptist Church of Norwich by the late Reverend Percy A. Kilmister. Leonard predeceased her on March 29, 1999.
She was an extremely active member of the First Baptist Church of Norwich, serving on many committees since her baptism by the late Rev. Edward C. Dunbar on June 17, 1928.
Mrs. Royce worked in the Commercial Dept. Office at NFA; the Western Union, Prudential Insurance Office, Draft Board, Selective Service Office and in the First Baptist Church Office. She was the Senior Leader Club of the YMCA.She was a member of the Vasa Lodge No. 30, a member of the Society of the Founders of Norwich, and a member of The William W. Backus Hospital Auxiliary. She also served as "Dressing Chairman" for the American Cancer Society.
She is survived by two daughters and two sons, Bonnie Lee and Albert A. Koch, of Bloomfield Hills, Mich., Cynthia R. and Richard H. Strouse, of Norwich, Frank D. and Elizabeth W. Royce, of Griswold, and David N. and Mary E. Royce, of Niantic; also 20 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren and many loving nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by a brother, Gustave C. Sandberg, and five sisters, Edah Cruthers, Lillian Kreth, Alice Johndrow, Edna Whitehead and Emily Holland.
A Graveside Service will be held on Saturday for family of Doris Royce at Maplewood Cemetery at 12:30 p.m.
A Memorial Service will be held Saturday at the First Baptist Church of Norwich at 2 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Doris Royce's memory may be made to the First Baptist Church of Norwich, 239 West Main St., Norwich, CT 06360.
The Church and Allen Funeral Home, 136 Sachem St., Norwich is entrusted with arrangements.
