Dorothy Gwenneth Moxley

1926 - 2018

Preston - Dorothy Gwenneth Moxley, 92, our feisty, loving mother, passed away at The William W. Backus Hospital on Wednesday, Aug. 29, 2018, after a short illness.

Dorothy leaves behind her daughter, Lee (Cornell McNair) of Griswold; son, Ian of Preston; grandchildren, Katherine (Chris Patnaude) and Harrison (Kristy Miller); great-grandson, James; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Dorothy was born in Kingston, Ontario, Canada to Harry and Gladys (Hunter) Wright. Dorothy was predeceased by her husband, Don; and her brothers, Harold and Ken.

A bright student, Dorothy went to Kingston Collegiate Vocational Institute. While still in school, Dorothy was asked to work at the Royal Bank of Canada and worked there becoming head teller. She left to work as a bookkeeper at L.J. Jewel, and then as head bookkeeper at a personal finance company.

Around 1951, Dot joined the Women's Royal Canadian Naval Reserve where she learned semaphore and Morse code.

Don and Dot were married in 1954 at Cooke's United Church in Kingston. After marrying, the couple lived in Hartford, where Dot worked at American Electric Supply as a bookkeeper.

Dot and Don later moved to Noank and raised their family there. Dot was an active member of Noank Baptist Church and was in the Noank Women's Bowling League. Most summers would find the family camping in New York or Canada and one memorable summer camping across the country and into Canada. In 1975 the family moved to Preston. Dot enjoyed participating in many of the Preston City Congregational Church activities and was the treasurer of the deacon's fund for 29 years. Dot loved caring for her grandchildren after school and taught them how to play poker.

The family would like to thank the staff of Backus Hospital and Hartford Healthcare Hospice Services for their wonderful care of Dorothy and support to our family during this time.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Preston City Congregational Church, 321 Rte. 164 Preston, CT 06365.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 5, at Church and Allen Funeral Home, 136 Sachem St., Norwich. Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 6, at Preston City Congregational Church, meeting directly at the church. Burial will immediately follow at Palmer Cemetery in Preston.
