Ed was born on May 22, 1964, in Wilkes- Barre, Pa., the son of Edward A. Smuts of Brattleboro, Vt., and the late Marikae (Petrello) Smuts.
He was married to the former Jennifer Upchurch on Oct 6, 2000, in Groton and had been employed since 1984 as a fire captain at Electric Boat in Groton.
Ed was a member of the St. Mary Mother of the Redeemer Church in Groton and from 1988 to 1997 had been a volunteer member of the Old Saybrook Fire Dept., and for many years been a member of the Old Saybrook Ambulance Dept.
His devotion to his family, his work, and his friends are what will define his shortened life.
Besides his wife and father, Ed is survived by his daughter, Caroline O. Smuts of Mystic; a sister, Maria Hyatt of Granville, N.Y.; and his stepmother, Janette Smuts of Brattleboro.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Mary Mother of the Redeemer Church, 67 Groton Long Point Road, Groton. His burial will follow in the Elm Grove Cemetery, Mystic. Visiting hours will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday at the Byles-Groton Memorial Home, 310 Thames St.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions be sent to Caroline's education fund made payable to College America FBO, Caroline O. Smuts, c/o Essex Financial Services, PO Box 999, Essex CT 06426.

I had learned of Ed's passing through my daughter and some other friends. I wanted to extend my sympathy and condolences to the Smuts family at this time. I always enjoyed a few good laughs with Ed at work and always enjoyed our chats about work and other things. Ed was a great guy, and even though I am over a thousand miles away, I will always remember him. Ed will be sorely missed by many of his co-workers. May God richly bless your family at this time, and smile upon you!

Jennifer -
I just heard about Ed's passing, and I wanted to offer my sympathy and prayers to you and Caroline.
I've seen you grow from a young girl into the woman you have become today. I'm sure that with your family, and your faith, you'll raise your daughter to appreciate the memory of her father and the family you've made together.
