Ernest George Denis

1933 - 2021

Bozrah - Ernest George Denis arrived in Heaven Dec. 20, 2021. He will be celebrating Christmas there with his late wife, Hermaine "Mickey" (Zawacki) Denis, who passed in 2000.

"George" was born Aug. 19, 1933, in Jewett City, to a clever man and pretty woman, Alfred and Merilda (St. John) Denis. He attended St. Mary's School and graduated from Griswold High in 1951. Whilst in high school, he developed his carpentry skills and assisted his father on many a project. From 1951 to 1955, George proudly served in the U.S. Air Force, assigned to a Military Air Transport Squadron at Clark AFB in the Philippines, attaining the rank of sergeant.

After returning from military service, he began his career at Southern New England Telephone Company in February of 1956. Starting as a lineman and eventually becoming a Manager of Business Services. Prior to his retirement in 1991, he was a Construction Foreman on SNET's LIGHTNET Project, later known as US Sprint.

Married May 12, 1962, he and his wife raised four children, in a house he built with his own hands in Franklin. George is survived by his sister, Yvette Gordon; his three sons, Douglas Denis, Dean Denis and David Denis (Ellen); one daughter, Debra Denis Ramos (Milton); and six grandchildren. He was predeceased by two sisters, Doris Sadowski and Jacqui Fish; and a brother, Thomas Denis.

A wake will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 29, at Woyasz & Son Funeral Home, 141 Central Avenue in Norwich. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 30, at Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church, 57 West Town Street, Norwich. Presentation of Military Honors will take place after the Mass. A private interment will occur at ST Joseph Cemetery in Norwich at later date.
