Fran Lo Obituary

Old Lyme - Fran (Belknap) Lo, 73, left us Dec. 23, 2024. She leaves her husband of 40 years, Julian; children Emma (with husband Rahul and their daughter Ezme), and Phoebe; brother David (with wife Sara); and sisters-in-law, Eve and Joan.

Fran was a proud and loving stay-at-home mom when her children were young, and an English and Social Studies teacher at St. Bernard School for many years. Prior to this, she grew up in Wisconsin before moving to New York and then Connecticut. She was an active school volunteer when her children were small and edited the Region 18 newsletter Education Currents in the 1990s. She published two books - Superwoman Didn't Do Us Any Favors, and Between the Lines - and created countless projects, plays, simulations, and mock trials for her students. She spent much of her adult life helping people make sense of computers and technology and worked as a systems analyst and consultant prior to teaching. She also taught an online course for Virtual High School, which she enjoyed even more than being in a conventional classroom.

She graduated from Oberlin College (BA), New York University Sloan School of Business (MBA), and Connecticut College (MAT). A voracious and life-long learner, she read widely and often took online courses to learn new things. She enjoyed a good murder mystery, and was active in the Connecticut Handweavers Guild, producing beautiful textile works that experimented with color. She was also active in online patient forums helping others with Parkinson's Disease/Parkinsonism, Corticobasal Degeneration, and Transverse Myelitis.

I met Fran at Oberlin. We were roommates our junior year and housemates our senior year. Still remember the runs across the Square to Gibson´s for apple cider donuts! We reconnected in NYC, and she came out to WI to be in my wedding party. She was a really interesting person! Condolences to her entire family from my husband Joe and myself, Judy (Miller) Axelrod.
