Frank Bouges Obituary

Waterford - Frank Howard Bouges, 87, of Beechwood Drive, passed away on Thursday, Sept. 27, 2012, at New London Rehabilitation and Care Center, Waterford.

Frank was born on June 17, 1925, in Hendrick's Head Lighthouse in West Southport, Maine, son of Carlyle and Catherine (Marr) Bouges. He was the last of the Marr descendents, a family of lighthouse keepers to be born in the lighthouse. He graduated from East Deering High School in South Portland, Maine, in the top 10 of his class and a varsity letter in baseball in 1942.

The day after graduation, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy. He served as a pharmacist's mate, second class, and operating room technician aboard the USS Princeton aircraft carrier, patrolling the South Pacific in World War II until 1946.

In 1950, Frank married Jeanette Ludemann of West Haven. They were married for 62 happy years. They have three children and six grandchildren.

Frank attended the University of Connecticut under the G.I. bill and graduated with a bachelor's degree in education in less than three years in 1953. His first teaching job was at North Myannis School in Greenwich. He earned his administrative master's degree at Columbia University and took a position as principal at Brunswick Junior High School in Brunswick, Maine in 1959. In 1962, Frank became assistant principal/history teacher at East Lyme Junior High School. When East Lyme High School opened in 1967, Frank became assistant principal and remained there until 1986. He served as assistant superintendent until his retirement in 1987.

Frank was an active golfer, bowler, and life-long Red Sox fan. He was a very active charter member of Christ Lutheran Church in Niantic, holding several different offices as well as singing in the choir. He and Jeanette traveled extensively throughout the United States and Canada, attending more than thirty elderhostels during their retirement.

Besides his wife Jeanette, he is survived by his sons, Richard Bouges of Auburn, Mass. and Daniel Bouges of Groton; and his daughter, Debra McDermottt; as well as six grandchildren, Brendon McDermott, Trevor McDermott, Wesley Bouges, Abigail Bourges, Evan Bouges and Haley Bouges.

Funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 2, 2012, at Christ Lutheran Church Society Road, Niantic. The family will receive relatives and friends from 4 to 6 p.m. Monday, at the Thomas L. Neilan East Lyme Funeral Home, 48 Grand St., Niantic.

Donations in his memory may be made to either Hospice Southeastern Connecticut, 227 Dunham St., Norwich, CT 06360 or Christ Lutheran Church Memorial Gardens, 24 Society Road, Niantic, CT 06357.

As young freshman I remember my first meeting with Mr Bouges he was one of a kind. He was tough but fair and you quickly realized he had heard every excuse in the book but he always listened patiently and then gave you some good advice and of course your punishment if you had earned it. The world could use more men like Mr Bouges especially in education. My heartfelt condolences to the Bouges family.
