George Merritt Obituary

Old Lyme - George "Bud" Harrison Merritt, 96, of Naples, Fla. and Old Lyme, passed away on Wednesday, Aug. 1, 2018.

George was born in Pittsfield, Mass., on Dec. 6, 1921, son of Ethel (Martin) Merritt and Laurence Hobart Merritt. He graduated from Pittsfield High School in 1939 and Holy Cross College, Class of 1943, with a bachelor's degree in economics. He enlisted in the U.S. Air Force, serving as a lieutenant from 1943 to 1945. He chose a career in advertising, marketing and public relations. He worked with American Optical Co. and Travelers Insurance Co. before accepting a position with Milton Bradley Co. (Hasbro) where he worked from 1966 until his retirement in 1992 as vice president of advertising and public relations.

During his working years, George also became an instructor in the Dale Carnegie Course which he taught throughout New England for over 30 years. He was active in the blood drive program at the Vineyards in Naples, where he was also an active golf member of the Vineyards Country Club. In 2011, George began his volunteer work with Avow Hospice, providing marketing support for their fundraising efforts, care and compassion for end-of-life patients, and administering communion as a eucharistic minister to their families. In 2013, George was the recipient of Avow's coveted "Butterfly Award" – which honors "a person who has taken the personal loss of losing a loved one and channeled that loss into making end-of-life care better for others."

In 1945, George married Marion F. Loftus with whom he raised ten children. They made their home at 19 LeMay St., West Hartford for 33 years before retiring to the Vineyards in Naples, Fla. in 1992. They spent their summers at their home in Old Lyme which they bought in 1968.

Not sure what to say?

November 8, 2018

Belatedly, I have come upon this news and extend my best thoughts to the Merritt family. As a teacher, I knew several of the various siblings and Marion, their mother, who was a blessing on the world. I became a particular friend to Andrew, whom I loved and love. I have no idea if anyone will see this. If you do, please know that I remember you well and affectionately.

Mr. Merritt was an inspiring leader, who lead by example. He was admired and looked up to by the participants in his Dale Carnegie classes. I remember one day ask him about the pin on the lapel of his suit jacket and he told me it was given by the American Red Cross when you had reached the milestone of having donated a gallon of blood. He told me the story about how the Red Cross had come through for a member of his family in need of blood and as way of giving back he had started to donate. His example encouraged me to start giving despite the thought of giving blood being uncomfortable and fearful. Every time I give blood I think of Mr. Merritt and his inspirational message of you never know whose life you might save. I know his loss will be big and he will be greatly missed by his family. He lead a truly extraordinary life of service to others.

To Judy and her large family I send my deepest
condolences and also pray that your grieve is stilled by ALL of the memories that were made from your numerous house dance parties, beach bathing in Old Lyme and love you shared with others.
Judy, though it has been decades since last seeing each other at NW Re-Union, I reach out to those who are still special. I am so sorry for the death of your Dad as I experienced the same when my Dad passed on seven years ago. God Bless you all as your Father was one of a few.

I had the distinct opportunity and pleasure of working with George at Milton Bradley for a number of years. He was the consummate professional, always with a welcoming smile and friendly hello. He was a mentor and a friend and I continue to employ his wisdom to this day. And his always-at-the-ready "TERRRRIFIC" reply to "How ya doin', George?" is a favorite memory. My condolences to your extended family on the passing of this terrrrific guy.
