Helen Elizabeth "Bunny" Morgan

1939 - 2024

Helen Morgan Obituary

Waterford - Helen Elizabeth "Bunny" Morgan, 85, died peacefully Sept. 11, 2024, at the Yale-New Haven Hospital after a brief illness. She was born April 9, 1939, in Illinois to George Walker Morgan and Dorothy Wegg Morgan.

Bunny is survived by her three children, John Walker Joseph of Lake George, N.Y., Kelly Wegg Joseph of Waterford, and Russell Alden Joseph of Victor, Idaho. Other survivors include eight grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and a sister, Linda Levak of Durham, N.C. She was predeceased by one brother, George Walker Morgan.

Bunny attended Colby College and the University of Connecticut, where she studied veterinary medicine and history. Until moving to Waterford, Bunny lived most of her adult life in the Glens Falls, N.Y. area. From 1985-1997, Bunny served as the Diocesan Altar Guild Directress for the Episcopal Diocese of Albany under the direction of Bishop David Ball. Her ministry was to reclaim the crafts of altar vestment and linen construction. Once she herself learned these crafts, Bunny traveled all around the Diocese, teaching women from the parish altar guilds. She quickly became known as a wonderfully gifted teacher, both nationally and internationally. In this capacity, Bunny authored books with the purpose of gathering and sharing information for this ministry she cared so deeply for.

In 1997, Bunny launched an online business, Church Linens, which she operated from her home. She offered instruction, fabrics, patterns, tools, and a wealth of knowledge and support to altar guilds and liturgical seamstresses around the world. Her passion for serving the church and for ecclesiastical sewing led to several unique experiences, among which was making stoles for priests who were serving in the military. Bunny was also contacted by Leicester Cathedral to make linens for a newly constructed altar for the reinterment of King Richard III. She continued operating Church Linens up until the time of her death.

Bunny loved to read, to learn, and to teach others. She wove baskets, spun her own wool, and loved gardening, raising and releasing monarch butterflies, and cooking. Connecting with nature and animals of all kinds (her Dobermans, cats, canaries, as well as snakes, whales, and birds in the wild) was another passion that was very important to Bunny and brought her great solace.

Bunny was a curious, strong, and independent woman, and she loved meeting and connecting with people as she traveled around the world. Her strength and wit inspired all who knew her to love, to learn, and to serve their communities as they continue her great legacy.

A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 12, at The Cathedral of All Saints in Albany, NY. The service will be live streamed on the Cathedral's You Tube channel at the following link: https://www.youtube.com/@cathedralofallsaints/streams.

Yours is the voice in my head whenever I construct a vestment. Thank you for inspiring me and giving me the confidence to work for God.

Bunny taught me everything I know about making church vestments. She patiently responded to any question I sent her via email, made brilliant suggestions about design, and never failed to be encouraging, funny, and kind.

Bunny was so helpful to me with multiple vestment projects over the last fifteen or so years. Her kind and copious advice saved me much trouble, and I am so glad to have been able to meet her in person in August 2023 while I was in Connecticut. May the Lord grant her eternal rest and joy in his presence!

Bunny was so helpful to me when I was first assigned the job of sewing linens for our church here in Lakewood, WA. She guided me through the trauma of handling real linen, all that embroidery. She was wonderfully kind and patient.

I was asked to create altar paraments and linens for our Lutheran church in 2021. I immediately contacted Elizabeth, whose book I had already read and loved, and asked her at least a million questions! She was so kind and patient with me, and I considered her my mentor. She saved me so much time with her encyclopedic knowledge and experience, so that I was able to deliver all new paraments and linens in my spare time in 2021, and my congregation (and altar guild) loves them. She left such a legacy; to God be glory, honor and praise! I will miss her very much.

I just now learned of Elizabeth's death. I am truly sorry. She always seemed such an indomitable spirit I just couldn't imagine the world without her in it. I communicated numerous times with Elizabeth with regard to linen projects over many years and she was a wonderful help, sharing her knowledge and experience so generously. She will be very sadly missed. RIP

I had the privilege of meeting Elizabeth in May 2023. She welcomed me and my friend and gave us wonderful support and advice as we embarked upon our first liturgical project: Lenten Paraments & Vestments. Without her we would have wandered in the dark. She was a gift from God.

I just now read this. I am so very sorry for her loss. She was so very helpful to me when we were making new paraments for our church with emails and phone calls. Much knowledge is lost with her.

I learned today of Bunny's passing. I am very grateful for the personalized help Bunny gave me obtaining M Perkins vestment fabrics and galloons for my first Low Mass and Solemn High Mass sets. Bunny and I had many emails about vestment design, altar frontal construction, and delightful conversations on the phone on dealing with shipping from Great Britain. I miss her!
