Ida Dougherty Obituary

Webster - Ida E. (Sellitti) Dougherty, 100, died Friday, March 18, 2022, at the home of her son and caretaker, surrounded by the love of her family. Her husband of 47 years, Francis X. Dougherty Sr. died in 1993.

She leaves four sons: Francis X. Dougherty Jr. and his wife Beverly of Southbridge, John E. and Lynne Dougherty of Webster, Anthony J. Dougherty Sr. of New London, Joseph C. and Debbie Dougherty of New London; four daughters: Catherine A. and Scott Schaeffer of Easton, Pa., Therese Dougherty of Preston, Elizabeth A. and William Spicer Jr. of Lisbon, and Margaret M. Dougherty of Webster; 30 grandchildren; 44 great-grandchildren; 2 great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her two daughters, Susan T. Dougherty-Baker in 2009, and by Marie E. Dougherty-Fogg in 2015; also by her infant brothers, Mario and Joseph Sellitti; and her siblings, Vincent Sellitti, Antoinette Delesio, John Sellitti, Arthur Sellitti and Thomas Sellitti.

She was born April 19, 1921, in Brooklyn, N.Y., a daughter of Italian immigrants, Vincent and Anna (Garzillo) Sellitti. She was a high school graduate and earned her associate's degree in business.

Mrs. Dougherty was first and foremost a wife and mother and was a talented seamstress. She worked in the cafeteria at the Harbor School in New London, and as a stacker for the New London Day Newspaper.

She was a devout Catholic and a member of Saint Louis Church and a former member of Saint Joseph's Church in New London. She enjoyed sewing, crafts, gardening, cooking, dancing, poetry and playing both piano and violin. Her greatest joy was spending time with her family.

Her funeral will be held Friday, March 25, from the Sitkowski, Malboeuf & Hickey Funeral Home, 340 School Street, Webster, with a Mass at 10 p.m. in Saint Louis Church, 15 Lake Street. Burial will be in Saint Mary's Cemetery, New London. Calling hours will take place from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday, March 24, in the funeral home. www.websterfunerals.com.

Mom, I can't believe it has almost been a year since you went to Heaven with Jesus. Every day I feel you and know you are with me, and I hold you close to my heart forever until we meet face to face with Jesus together in Eternity! I love you forever beautiful Ma!
