James Warren Obituary

Salem - James D. Warren, 74, died peacefully in his home April 2, 2016, after waging a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer.

He was born Feb. 4, 1942, in Torrington, to parents Carlton Davison and Doris (McCarthy) Warren.

He and his wife, Lana, were married Dec. 30, 1966. They had met while attending the University of Hartford, where he received a master's degree in business administration.

Jim was an army veteran, who served with distinction as an artillery specialist in Vietnam from 1968-1969. He regularly endured incoming fire. After his military service he worked for Pratt & Whitney his entire adult life before retiring in 2006. He did warranty work on engines for Pratt & Whitney, frequently traveling around the country and the world.

Until his death, he maintained relationships in London and Japan, among other places. When possible, Lana would join Jim on his travels, enjoying each others company as they criss-crossed the world. Jim was a hard and competent worker both on and off the job, having built the family home on West Road with Lana's father, Michael Urbanik. Over the years, he also could be found working on a project or just puttering around the yard. He was a devoted husband and a loving father and grandfather. His life was centered around his family. Jim took his entire family to Holden Beach, N.C., year after year. There they gathered with extended family and friends and enjoyed the beach. He also traveled with the family as far as Cairo, Egypt, where together they marveled at the pyramids one Christmas. Jim was a sports fan. He rooted avidly for the University of Connecticut men's and women's basketball teams. He loved fishing and closely followed the New York Giants. Jim loved Salem and served on the town's finance board, Salem Lions Club, and as Boy Scout leader.

Besides his wife, Jim is survived by a son, Michael, and a daughter, Jennifer Warren Kenney, both of Salem; a sister, Diane Valigorsky of Florida; and grandchildren, Ryan, Isabella, Brouwer and Embry, all of Salem. He will be missed by his loving family and many friends.

Calling hours will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. on Wednesday, April 6, at the Aurora-McCarthy Funeral Home, 167 Old Hartford Road, Colchester. The funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, April 7, directly at the Congregational Church of Salem. Burial will follow in the Salem Green Cemetery with full military honors.

The family requests that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Congregational Church of Salem, 260 Hartford Road, Salem, CT 06420.

Very sad news. A wonderful and most likable guy. I met Jim in 1959, the year before he graduated THS. His neighbor on Johnson Street, John Czausz, worked for us at the Clover Dairy during summer break and Jim would stop into our ice cream bar occasionally to wait for John to finish out his day and we'd go places He was lots of fun to be around. My former wife, Susan Goldman, graduated from New London High School with Lana. She sends her condolences as well. I will always remember "BLIMP", an endearing name that he inherited from his friends. My deepest condolences to Lana, his children, his extended family and friends. R.I.P.- JIM

2012 - Jim's 70th in Marathon

Jim was much more than "just an economics major" as he liked to say and I had the good fortune and pleasure to work with Jim for several years and call him a friend for even longer.

Good fortune because he was extremely knowledgeable and quick to share his knowledge and mentor me and others. His airline customers also loved Jim because he could often accomplish the impossible and get those elusive spare parts they needed.

Pleasureable because he was just a fun guy to be around and eagerly shared his joy of fishing, sports, gardening, his family's accomplishments and many other interests. Lesley and I were a couple of the lucky friends mentioned that shared time with Jim & Lana, including his 70th birthday in Marathon, Fla. and annual vacations in Holden Beach, NC where they were gracious and welcoming hosts. And where Jim would look at the vacation communal jigsaw puzzle and insert the elusive piece that had completion on hold.

Jim we had planned another visit and chat. I'll look forward to it when I get there. BTW put in a good word for me as I'll probably need your help. Again!
