Jane Clarke Obituary

Mystic - Jane (Johnson) Clarke took her last breath on Sunday, May 15, 2011, with her loving sons by her side.

Jane was born Emma Jane Johnson on May 31, 1923 in Harrisburg, Pa. Jane graduated from Robert E. Fitch Senior High School in 1943.

While working at Electric Boat as a sheet metal worker to help the war effort, Jane met and married James F. Clarke. She gave birth to her sons, Alan and John.

She returned to Mystic in 1957 to raise her sons as a single parent. Jane never drove a car. When Mystic Manor opened in in 1967, Jane was their first cook workng there for 23 years. In spite of difficult times, Jane enjoyed life. She loved her sons and her three grandchildren. She loved flowers and bright colors. When she retired from Mystic Manor, she moved into senior housing in Groton and always had a small flower garden just outside her door.

Jane was an avid Bingo player. Her favorite number was G48, as this was her age when she started playing. When she moved to Mystic Health Care Center, she changed her favorite number to 68, because she said that 68 was always called. She always played the cards that life dealt her without complaint. Jane spent the last 18 months of her life living at the very nursing home that she helped to get started. She will be missed.

Jane is survived by her son, Alan Clarke and his wife, Pamela, formerly of Stonington, now living in South Carolina and their son Christopher and his wife, Nicole, of Plainfield, her son John Clarke and his wife, Karen, of Ledyard and their children, Matthew Clarke of Ledyard and Rebecca Clarke of Pensacola, Fla.

In accordance with Jane's wishes, there are no calling hours. A private family service will be held later this summer.

To all the Clake's with sincere sympathy for the loss of your loved one, Jane. She was so much a part of all our lives as she was always there at parties and events. She always had a smile, laugh and kind word for everyone. She had a hard life but a good one with her family always at her side. I know she will be deeply missed.
