Gales Ferry - It is with profound sadness that the Naval Submarine Base New London (SUBASE) Fire Department is grieving the loss of one of its senior leaders. Assistant Fire Chief Jeffrey Post, 44, went home to the Lord as the sun rose on Wednesday, Aug. 2, 2023, surrounded by his loving family and first responder family. Born in New London, he was a native of Mystic and was residing in Gales Ferry for the past sixteen years.
Jeff was the loving husband of Chrissy (Gilliland) Post for the past 21 years. Jeffrey began his love of firefighting at the young age of fourteen with the Old Mystic Fire Department's junior cadet program. In addition to the Old Mystic Fire Department, Jeff volunteered at the Mystic Fire Department Hook and Ladder Co., Gales Ferry Fire Company and most recently as Chief of Center Groton Fire Department. His career started for the Mohegan Tribal Fire Department in 1999, and in 2001, he joined the SUBASE Fire Department in Groton, where he began a long and dedicated career. It was in January of 2009, when he was promoted to captain and eventually promoted to assistant fire chief in August of 2015. Throughout his distinguished career, he contributed to countless incidents, many with outcomes made better by his knowledge and direction.
A dedicated firefighter, EMT and HAZMAT and rescue expert, Jeffrey was one of the bravest there was in the department. He exemplified the true definition of a great leader who was a valued team leader and colleague to many. Jeffrey was a fire service instructor, training and especially mentoring the next generation of firefighters at the SUBASE, The Region and the CT Fire Academy. In 2014, alongside his brothers in service, Jeff started his own training company, All Hands Operating.
Jeffrey was a wonderful husband and father. He enjoyed spending time with his children watching them grow and attending and volunteering with many of their sports and activities. Jeff was an avid baseball fan, instilling his love for the game into his son, spending several years coaching his many baseball teams.
Besides his wife, he leaves his two children, Olivia and John; his loving parents, Steven and Cynthia; two brothers, Scott (Christy) and Daniel (Lauren); his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Michael and Renate Gilliland; his brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Mickey and Glenna Gilliland; and his eight nieces and nephews.
His family will receive relatives and friends from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 8, at the Mystic Funeral Home located on Route 1 in Mystic. A service celebrating Jeffrey's life will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, August 9, at the Mystic Hook & Ladder, 52 New London Road, Mystic. Following the service, a funeral cortege will travel to the Elm Grove Cemetery in Mystic, where he will be laid to rest.
In lieu of flowers, the family would be honored to have donations to establish a memorial scholarship in memory of Jeffrey and a college fund for his children. Donations can be sent directly to the Submarine Base Fire Department Local F-219, P.O. Box 5003 Groton, CT. 06349-5003. The family invites you to leave a note of condolence at
