John Evans Obituary
He was born on July 6, 1927 in Boston, Mass., the son of John S. and Cathryn (Abban) Evans. He had been married to the late Jean (Viden) Evans on Nov. 18, 1950 in Massachusetts. She passed away on June 27, 2000.
John was a Navy veteran of World War II, and Korea, having served proudly for more than 20 years, retiring in 1948 as a chief. An expert on diesel engines, following his naval service, he began a 20 year career with Electric Boat in Groton, travelling the world working on diesel related problems that arose on U.S. Submarines. He was a member of both the Sub Vets and the Fleet Reserve, both in Groton. John loved fishing, clock and furniture making. He was an avid gardener; and especially loved spending time with his wife and friends in St. Maarten.
The chief is survived by two sons, Michael Evans and his wife, Donna Weber Evans, of Calif., Patrick Evans of North Carolina; a daughter, Linda Caprilozzi, Linda's husband David, who was his special son-in-law, both of Ledyard; four grandchildren, Domanick, Marjorie, Darrick and Mary; and one great-granddaughter, Jaylyn. The family wishes to give special thanks to Robert Lamb whom they consider their hero.
Chief Evans had also been predeceased by two sisters, Katherine Lambe, Marie McCusker; and a brother, Robert Evans.
His funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, March 19, at the Byles-Groton Memorial Home, 310 Thames St., Groton. His burial with military honors will follow in the Lambtown Cemetery in Ledyard. Visiting hours will be held from 11 to 1 p.m. prior to his service.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in his memory be directed to the Sub Vets Club, Inc., 40 School St., Groton, CT 06340.

Dear Linda, Pat & Mike: My sincere sympathy in the loss of your Dad. They were such an enormous part of my Dad and Moms life; in the Navy and socially. I am sorry we did not know about this until today, as we do not get the New London Day. We certainly would have been at his funeral. It is such a tremendous loss when you loose a Dad. We are all still dealing with our Dad's. What a great picture. We all have so many memories from the early 50's till now, wow, we could write a book. I never knew John, however reading about his passing and the many things he enjoyed during his life I could have been on the same page. I loved gardening, I'm a Navy Vet and a disabeled on at that and like John I enjoyed St Johns and many other Caribbean destinations. As for being a friend of Bobby Lamb, Bob and I did our best to keep taxes down in Ledyard.
So from my Winter home in Florida allow me to salute "The Chief" and join his family in this moment of grief.

Uncle John....you leave me with many happy memories.I enjoyed getting closer to you the past 8yrs.Your visits with my Mum will always hold a special place in my heart as you will always be in my heart.The Labor Day weekend cook outs were some of the best times of my childhood.
A special thank you for always keeping my Mum close to your heart especially when she was in her darkest days,your visits meant so much to Eileen and me.
Happy St Patrick's Day Uncle John,have an Irish coffee for me in Heaven at the "grown ups" party tonight.
