John Wadsworth Obituary

Waterford - Captain John Wadsworth of Waterford, passed away on Monday, Jan. 25, 2016, surrounded by family and friends.

He was born Nov. 22, 1936, in Willimantic, the son of Earle and Doris Wadsworth. The family moved to Mago Point in Waterford in 1940, where he worked and resided all his life.

John became a charter boat captain at the age of 18. After serving in the Air Force, he returned to Waterford where he owned and operated Captain Johns Sport Fishing Center (The Sunbeam Fleet) for over 50 years. He later took over operation of the family owned Mago Point Marina.

Captain John was instrumental in repopulating Niantic bay scallops and aided in the establishment of the Jordan Village Ambulance Service. He was a past master and member of Bayview Lodge #120 for over 50 years. He was a 32nd degree Scottish rite mason and a member of Sphinx Temple A.A.O.N.M.S.

He was active in many organizations: CT Charter Boat Association, Mago Point Business Association, Niantic Sportsman's Club, Shellfish Commission, American Legion, and Jordan Fire Department. In his leisure time, he enjoyed hunting, fishing and spending time at their cabin in Maine. His number one passion was having a celebration of any occasion.

John is survived by his devoted wife and companion of 30 years, Amy; his children, John, Robert and Christine, their mother, Dorothy Vargas, and their other brother, Matty; his brother, George; and sister, Jane; his grandchildren, John III, Michael, Meagan, Ryan, and Daniel; and many nieces, nephews and close friends.

He is predeceased by brothers, Bill and Richard; and two nephews, George Jr. and Richard Jr.

Family and friends will gather on Saturday, Feb. 6, at the Niantic Masonic Temple, 32 Society Road, Niantic, for a Masonic Service by Bayview Lodge #120 at 4 p.m., followed by a celebration of life from 4:30 to 8:30 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, please send donations to: Bayview Lodge #120, Niantic Masonic Temple, P.O. Box 120, Niantic, CT 06357-0120.

Even in my short time knowing him he taught me the lesson of a handshake being the final word. There are not many people like him around anymore and even in my short time with him I have many stories of him. All of them good and some of them very funny. You always knew where you stood with him. He gave a certain zest to everything he did. I think after a while he actually liked me. To everything we did together his final word was, let´s drink to that. I will treasure him for the rest of my life

First learned of Captain John when I stumbled upon the Sunbeam lighthouse cruises in mid-90s. I went every summer for several years because it was so wonderful and brought me such joy at a very difficult time when I could not afford much vacation. I later ventured on one of the last whale watches and in 2000 I enjoyed a special sail to watch the "parade of ships". It was a brilliant spectacular day. Thank you Captain John for all the lovely memories and joy I will have forever because of you. Rest peacefully.

Capt John was a very special man and will always hold a very special place in my heart. His wife Amy was a devoted loving woman to not only John but to each of my kids who are Capt John's Grandchildren. My kids grew up on Capt John's Docks fishing, running and viewing many a sunset with their Grandpa. The loss is felt deeply with all of us but his memory will live forever in our hearts and his soul will always live forever in Mago Point Marina that will always live on as Legacy to the Wadsworths. Lots of love to Amy, Tonka, Bob,Chris, Aunt Jane and Uncle Goerge.

To the Family and Friends of Captain John,
We share the sense of loss but also the great memories that he left us. He was bold, kind, heroic and entertaining, among other things. His legacy is great, having touched the lives of so many. We are grateful to have known him, a man ordinary and yet extraordinary at the same time. May the thoughts of happier times be of comfort now and in the days to come.

To Capt. John's family,
I meet Cpt. John when I was 13 years old. For some reason he took a liking to me. Through the years we had many great times together at the dock and many other places. He always treated me with respect and as a good friend. I learned most of my knowledge of Long Island Sound and fishing from him. We had many laughs together. I always looked up to his with respect and admiration . It's truly a great lost to the salt water fishing community and his many friends and family. My deepest regrets to all off you

I will greatly miss John (skin head). Memories abound of our friendship starting as kids on the Niantic river & working charter boats. We enjoyed many experiences/adventures during our younger years. Some of which might be frowned upon today. No sense of humor any more. I believe we will meet up again. God Bless!!
