Joseph Liam "Joe" Kelly obituary, Lisbon, CT

Joseph Kelly Obituary

Lisbon- Joseph Liam Kelly, 14, died May 26, 2012, at The William W. Backus Hospital in Norwich, after a long battle with cancer.

Joe was born on April 20, 1998, in Norwich.

He is survived by his parents, Brian and Andrea (Vasington) Kelly; and his sister, Katie who he loved, cherished, and protected. He is also survived by his paternal grandparents, Gerard and Marianne Kelly, his maternal grandparents, the Honorable Paul and Ann Vasington; and many aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends who he loved.

Joe was predeceased by his cousin, Michael Ronner.

Joe attended Lisbon Central School, where he received the Superintendent's Award and was a member of the Environmental Symposium, Student Learning Action People, and National Junior Honor Society.

Joe loved sports and played on youth football, basketball, soccer, and baseball teams. He played baseball for the Jewett City Little League and football for the Griswold Youth Football program. He was an accomplished kicker as well as an offensive center. A special moment for Joe was when he kicked off during a game despite being in the midst of chemotherapy treatment. Joe was an avid New England Patriots, Boston Red Sox, and Boston Celtics fan as well. Prior to Joe's passing, he was able to attend a Celtics game where he met his favorite player, Ray Allen, and received an autographed pair of sneakers.

Joe and his father enjoyed cooking and loved to discover different places to eat. They would often get up early to travel to find a new breakfast restaurant. Joe was able to travel to California and meet Guy Fieri of Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives fame who nicknamed him "Joe Burger."

Joe was caring, kind, and compassionate throughout his life and had an understanding of humanity beyond his years. He was always happy and genuinely concerned about everyone else. Even as he fought through his illness, he never complained about what he had to go through. Rather, he was always concerned with how others were doing or feeling, never wanting the focus or attention to be on himself. Joe was someone who always made you feel good about yourself. He had an infinite capacity to love. From the time he was old enough to walk, he would give hugs to everyone he met, family, friends, and teachers. Joe was a gift to those of us fortunate enough to have known him. Those who loved him will miss him dearly.

Calling hours will be 4 to 7 p.m. on Wednesday, May 30, at Gagne-Piechowski Funeral Home, 490 Voluntown Road, Jewett City. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m on Thursday, May 31, at The Cathedral of St. Patrick, Norwich. Following the service, the burial will be held at St. Mary Mausoleum, Norwich.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Joseph Kelly Memorial Scholarship Fund at Lisbon Central School, 15 Newent Road, Lisbon, CT 06351. Donations may also be given in Joe's name to the Connecticut Children's Medical Center Oncology Department.

I feel I was meant to read about your son, Joe. I lost my son, Travis, at age 14 to heart disease. He also played sports and his favorite player was Ray Allen and wore the number "34" that Allen wore at UCONN. He died during a Middle School basketball game. The similarites between Travis and Joe go beyond a love of sports. I can see Travis welcoming Joe into heaven. God bless all of you.

We all feel just horribly about this loss of young life! Many, many co-workers at Pfizer grieve for your loss and all that your family has endured. Joe's obituary in the Day is both a wonderful testimony of love and a celebration of life. I'll never forget all the pictures on your desk, Brian, including Joe writing his name into the new fallen snow. You can swing by my house, and criticize my crooked fence installation, any time.

To the Kelly Family:

Last baseball season, we learned of Joe's story. I (Dawn) have had a gray bracelet with is name on it hanging in my car since that time. "For some reason”, it caught my eye today, and I thought of Joe and wondered how he was doing. I even passed the funeral home and saw the gathering, but I didn't make the connection until I got home and I looked at the obituaries and saw Joe's name. I wanted to let you know that we are deeply saddened to hear of Joe's passing and you all are in our thoughts. But most importantly, I want you to know that Joe was in my thoughts today, because his bracelet caught my attention today...I have put his bracelet around a candle tonight in honor of your courageous son.
