Salem - Joseph W. Melnyk, 61, of Salem, died peacefully on Saturday, March 14, 2015, with his family at his side.

On Feb. 27, 1954, he was born in Providence, the son of the late Stanley and Doris (Davis) Melnyk.

Joseph was the loving husband of Camilla Z. (Nygaard) Melnyk. For the past 23 years, he has been a social worker with The Arc of New London County. Prior to that, he worked at American Standard in Wauregan for 19 years. While trying decide on a change of career after the closing of American Standard, Joe attended culinary school before accepting the position with The Arc.

In addition to his wife, Camilla, he is survived by his step-children, Sarah Brennan and husband, Chris, Sean Nixon, and Scott Nixon and wife, Pam; and two grandchildren, Hailey Brennan and Eli Nixon.

A calling hour will be held from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. on Wednesday, March 18, at the Woyasz & Son Funeral Home, 11 Jerome Road, Uncasville, followed by a Funeral Mass at 10 a.m. at St. John Church. Burial will follow in St. Patrick Cemetery.

I am sorry for your loss. Joe was a kind and giving person. He talked often of his family and it was obvious that he was proud and grateful to have all of you in his life. Joe was also so appreciative of the support and strength he received from his wife. He said on more than a few occasions that she would not allow the word "quit" to be part of his vocabulary. He loved and admired you for this.
