He was born June 9, 1924, in New London, the son of the late Lewis R. and Louise (Silva) Stevens Sr.
After attending Chapman Technical High School, he enlisted in the Navy Air Corps in 1942 and was trained as a nose gunner on a B-24 in Georgia. Lewis was stationed in Brazil with the Patrol Bombing Squadron 107. He flew 70 missions sinking German U-boats and surface ships. After being honorably discharged from the Navy, he returned to New London and attended Mitchell College.
He married the former Adeline Mariani on July 10, 1948, in St. Mary Star of the Sea Church; Mrs. Stevens survives him.
Mr. Stevens worked at Electric Boat as a electrical designer for 35 years, retiring in 1987. Lewis was active in EBAC Tuesday Bowling and the MDA Union. He had a passion for playing golf, photography, his children, and grandchildren.
Besides his loving wife, Adeline of 58 years of marriage, he is survived by a son, Lewis R. Stevens III his wife, Laurie, and grandsons, Christopher and Ryan, all of Gales Ferry; and a daughter, Robbin Edwards and her husband, William, and granddaughters, Stephanie and Gina, all of Quaker Hill.
He was predeceased by a sister, Doris O'Callaghan.
His family will receive relatives and friends from 5 to 8 p.m. on Monday at the Impellitteri-Malia Funeral Home, 84 Montauk Ave., New London. Guests are asked to gather for a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. on Tuesday in St. Joseph Church, 17 Squire St., New London. Interment with military honors will be in St. Mary Cemetery.
